THE END IS NEAR!

No, we are not talking about armageddon, thankfully. However, the end of tax season is rapidly approaching. April 15th falls on a Wednesday this year, which is only 2 weeks away. If you are a last minute filer and file that last week of the season (4/8 - 4/15), we highly recommend you make your appointment ASAP.

For those who file remotely with us, please send us your tax documents before 4/8/26. If you send us your documents, after that date, we cannot guarantee that your return will be completed by 4/15/26 as we put priority to those that come in for appointments.

Thank you for understanding! 🤓

Think you aren't responsible for what is on your tax return if you go to get it professionally prepared somewhere? Think again! Once you sign a tax return, you own the information on it no matter who prepared it. That's why it's important that you go to a reputable and credentialed preparer who is experienced and doesn't violate tax law just to get you back a bigger refund. If the preparer is doing something fraudulent and/or grossly negligent, they can be sanctioned by the IRS and face penalties and/or jail time. However, their clients still are responsible for their bottom line on a tax return and if audited, may have to pay back thousands of dollars plus interest and penalties if there is anything in error on the return. Play it safe and find someone on the IRS's website that is credentialed and makes a living in the tax preparation industry instead of just someone with a PTIN who does the work seasonally during tax season. When it comes to your tax return, don't trust just anyone with something so important!

3 Significant Changes to Our Tax Code

With the passing of the One Big Beautiful Bill last July, there were 3 changes to the tax code which affects the most taxpayers:

1. Overtime income will be deducted from taxable income (up to $12,500 for Single filers and $25,000 for Married filers, with an income phase-out at $150,000 for Single filers and $300,000 for Married filers). **W2 should show the amount of the premium overtime that qualifies for the deduction in Box 14**

2. Tip income will be deducted from taxable income (up to $25,000 per individual, with an income phase-out beginning at $150,000 for Single filers and $300,000 for Married filers). **Eligible tips will be listed in Box 7 of W2 and/or reported on Form 4137 of taxpayer's tax return if employee failed to report tips to their employer**

3. Car loan interest can be deducted from taxable income, up to $10,000 (deduction phase-out starts at $100,000 for Single filers and $200,000 for Married filers). **Must be a new car loan made after 12/31/24 with the final assembly of the vehicle being in the U.S.**

IRS OPENING DATE

The IRS just announced that Monday, January 26th will be the opening date this year when they will open up their efiling system and start processing returns again.

We can always prepare your tax return before that date if you have all your tax documents but it will sit until then before they start processing it.

Happy New Year my fellow taxpayers! The 2025 tax season is upon us and we are ready to serve you. The IRS hasn't announced yet when they are opening their efile system in order to start processing returns electronically. Typically, they do it in late January. Don't fret though! We are taking appointments now if you have all your tax documents already. We can prepare your return, send it to the IRS, and it will sit with them until the morning their efile system opens up. Bottom line is that when you are ready, we are ready! Give us a call/text to make an appointment at (313) 294-9950.

IRS Efile Annual Shutdown

The IRS has announced that the last day to electronically file individual and business tax returns is Friday, December 26, 2025. All returns must be transmitted prior to 11:59 AM EST in order to be processed. The temporary shutdown of the Modernized e-File (MeF) system will allow the IRS to prepare the system for the upcoming 2026 filing season.

This is about a month later than when they normally shut down their efile system each year for maintenance. We are left to wonder if they won't open the system back up until late February, which is about a month later than usual. We sure hope not! 🤨

PAPER CHECKS

The U.S. Treasury recently announced that they will stop issuing paper checks for federal payments, including tax refunds, on Sept. 30th, 2025. This means taxpayers will have to receive their refunds, social security payments, Veteran payments, etc. electronically. The most common form of electronic payments is direct deposit into your bank account or on to a money card. If you still want your refunds to be on a check, Refunds R Us has you covered! We offer a bank product where you can get a cashier's check printed out at our office. However, be aware, there are extra fees associated with bank products (always the 'ole tradeoff).

It is unclear whether the U.S. Treasury will accept paper checks as a form of payment yet or not. Stay tuned....

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that the federal government will stop issuing paper checks for most federal payments on September 30, 2025. If you are one of the few people who still receives a federal benefit check, it’s time to switch to an electronic payment method....
