Many remember Max Teal as the gentleman who ran the front office here from 1998 to 2017, making copies, answering the phone, wrangling appointments, full of good-natured mischief, and bantering back and forth with his wife, Tula Teal, inbetween her appointments. He kept a pair of photographs on the wall, the one featured here, and the other with his hair and beard an absolutely scraggly mess, labeled as "before and after tax season".

My grandparents, Max and Tula Teal, have now both passed. They will be missed.

Scam alert! If you receive a notice from the IRS with a QR code on it, shred it and use it to line your rabbit cage. Or compost it or something.

Executive Order 14247 says that all tax refunds must be direct deposited. This has lead to some hiccups in deposits being directed correctly and some people will receive a CP53E notice to have their funds moved along to where they need to go. Scammers have created a very good replica of the IRS notice (and other notices) to attempt to have you divulge your banking information to them. Do not scan the QR code. Do not call the number. If there are any issues with your banking information, it can be corrected through your online account with the IRS at irs.gov.

"No smoking" means "no smoking". It does NOT mean "light up next to the 'no smoking' sign and open windows, leave your filthy discarded cigarette on a log on the porch, and maybe a fire won't happen".

The office is now very strictly non-smoking. Anybody caught smoking on the premises, especially if they litter, will be asked to leave. I am allergic to smoke and I am tired of getting sick due to inconsiderate and selfish people.

The office will be closed next week and will reopen on Monday, April 27th, to deal with some pressing family matters that had to take a back seat during tax season.

Starting with taking the mutt to the vet tomorrow for some overdue maintenance and tackling the jungle outside that thrived during the end-season chaos.

Lawdy! Pray for that poor person who just got me in alllllll my tired, awkward glory during a chance moment of free time. 😆 Y'all text me. I'm more coherent that way. 🫣

Let me know if you need an extension! Extensions have your filing obligation covered until October 15, but you still gotta pay any tax balance due by April 15th, so also let me know if you want to make a quick just-in-case payment while you're at it.

Had some new kind of fraud this year! I've seen fake farms, fake business losses, and bogus medical deductions on many prior year tax returns from newbies who come wandering in, but this was my first time with a $30k geothermal heat pump! And the icing on the cake: THE PREPARER CHARGED THEIR FEE BASED A PERCENTAGE OF THE REFUND. Hence, a heatpump that wiped out their tax liability and then they never responded again to their client. SHOCKER.

I am frumpy, grumpy, downright odd, and certainly have more to learn about taxes as no one person is ever capable of memorizing the entirety of tax code, but you ain't walkin' out of here with imaginary deductions. I will make your eyes glaze over on each relevant form to give you a fighting chance to know WHAT I put on your return after you gave me your data, and your return is signed up for audit protection from a professional team in case you get a letter and want some higher-grade help.

So, remember: ALWAYS ask your professional about their credentials, their experience, how their fees are structured, if they sign the return, their involvement in the review, and if they're in it with you or just a "wham, bam, thank ye ma'am" type. A couple of little things that can hopefully help you find a good professional and not one who will drop you into tax or legal trouble and run.
