AgroFoodSummit 2025

Last week we visited a conference organized by esteemed Співтовариство виробників і споживачів бобових України, which took place in Mersin, Turkiye.

During those three days we had a chance to meet and connect with many key players in the business, listen to meaningful presentations and among everything else visit the production facilities of one of the biggest food producers of the country - ARBEL PULSE and GRAIN TRADING COMPANY and witnessed Mersin International Port (MIP) infrastructure.

We were happy to be part of it and looking forward to more such events in the future.

Big thanks to all who helped to create such a great event!

Here's our latest Dry Bean Market report.

As of late May 2025, the dry bean market is showing signs of tightening being impacted by weather events and reduced acreage.

May 2025 in Ukraine was cool and rainy, with intense frosts occurring during the first 1–10 days. New crop got optimal soil moisture in most areas but did get heat deficit. Because of occasionally cold weather in May, pulses and beans are one-two weeks behind of average timelines.

In Mexico, planting is still behind schedule due to a long drought season in key producing states, leaving supply expectations highly weather-dependent.

Canada has reduced planted area this season. The US is facing moisture stress in main producing areas, raising early-season production risks. An uncertainty is already influencing forward market behavior.

In Argentina, the crop is developing. Early-planted fields showing strong potential, but later-planted areas which were delayed by excessive rain, now facing elevated frost risk. Market dynamics differ by variety: black and alubia beans are under price pressure due to competition from Brazil and Egypt, whereas while kidney and color beans have solid demand.

The projection of grain and leguminous crops in Ukraine

The USDA office in Kyiv projects Ukraine's wheat harvest for the 2025/26 MY to be 17,9 million t, lowest in 13 years and a 23% decrease from the previous year, due to dry soils and reduced crop area.

It also projects 4% increase in Ukraine's oilseed production in the 2025/26 MY, almost 25 million t. Sunflower seeds production is expected to rise by 11% to 14,4 million t. Soybean production is projected to decline by 6% to 6,5 million t. Rapeseed production is also expected to decrease by 3% to 2,8 million t.

As of May 9, 2025, Ukrainian farmers have sown 4,3 million hectares (76% of the targeted area) of spring grain and leguminous crops. The sowing includes significant areas dedicated to corn, barley, spring wheat, peas, oats, buckwheat, and millet. The total area to be sown with spring grain and leguminous crops including beans, chickpeas and lentils for 2025 is projected to be around 5,7 million hectares. Exports of leguminous crops is expected to be slightly higher compared to previous year.

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister, announced that 120 million t of cargo, including 76 million tons of agricultural products, have been transported through the Ukrainian sea corridor so far, reaching 53 countries.

Latest agricultural updates from Ukraine

April’s low temperatures, snow, and weak soil warming suspended the sowing of early spring crops, but partially contributed to the replenishment of productive moisture reserves in all soil layers.

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food due to the cold weather in April, this year’s sowing campaign is 200 thousand hectares behind last year, which is not critical.

Ukraine's grain and pulse exports for the MY 2024/25 decreased by 16,5% compared to the previous year, and is 34,5 million tons. This includes wheat, barley, rye, and corn exports with significant reductions in wheat exports by 12,6% to 13,6 million tons and corn exports by 22,6% to 18,1 million tons.

Overall grain production in Ukraine has declined significantly after a record harvest in the 2021/22 MY. This trend may continue in the upcoming season. It is noted that the production of the main grain crops - corn, barley, wheat - in 2024/25 turned out to be one of the lowest in the last 10 years, decreasing by 34% compared to the 2021/22 season due to a decrease in sowing area.

Updates on edible bean market

Ukraine:
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, this year Ukrainian farmers have increased the sown area for beans by 20% compared to the previous year, covering over 50,000 hectares which led to higher volumes of harvested beans. This makes beans the second most popular leguminous crop after peas in Ukraine. Despite a 20% decrease in 2022 compared to 2021, the bean cultivation area has been restored to pre-war levels. The main bean crops are grown in the western and central regions of Ukraine, accounting for over 55% of the country's total bean production. With all these, Ukraine has increased its export of edible beans to the EU and other regions this year.

United States & Canada:
North America faced oversupply issues this season. The US increased its production of edible beans and expanded its role as a key exporter to markets like the EU, Mexico and the Caribbean, where the US has geographic advantages. The US also is winning on the supply issues created by production gaps in Latin America. Canada’s consistent quality and reliable export capacity to the US and the EU remain strong. As demand keeps growing in Mexico and Latin American countries faced shortages, Canada has increased exports to these regions.

Mexico:
Mexico keeps pushing for bean self-sufficiency, particularly with the higher guaranteed prices, making local producers to meet more of the domestic demand, reducing reliance on imports. In addition, being a major consumer of beans in the region, Mexico’s demand remains is a stable target for North American suppliers.

Argentina & Brazil:
Despite lower yields, Argentina has strong export relationships within Latin America and Brazil, which benefits from Argentina’s proximity and established trade routes. The high prices due to reduced supply present helping to maximize export revenue in key markets. Argentina is targeting less quality-sensitive markets or investing in drought-resistant varieties to stabilize future production and maintain its trade presence. With strong domestic demand, Brazil is trying to reduce its dependence on imports and focus on meeting local needs.

Those were main updates on edible beans market so far. Keep tuned, since we would like to guide and navigate you through the world of Ukrainian pulses. Kindly visit our webpage to get more information on our activity and offers https://goldexim.net/news
