The former CEO of Macquarie Private Bank, Guy Hedley, who now chairs Atlas Advisors Australia and is on the federal government's migration review, said the government should re-open its Business Innovation and Investment Program to attract Hong Kongers looking to leave the territory and pump business investment into regional Australia.

"It is a massive opportunity," he said. "The reason Australia is attractive is because of proximity, time zone, it already has a large Hong Kong population here. Australia is a much better fit than the UK climate-wise."

One of the federal government's migration advisers says the unrest in Hong Kong provides a massive opportunity to lure highly skilled migrants to Australia.
