ABOUT JOPEZ ACADEMY

Jopez Academy is a financial education organisation that helps children, their parents and educators to build mindsets, habits and attitudes towards money and life mastery. Jopez Academy was formed with the aim of supplementing the current (pre-school/primary/secondary school) curriculum with age-appropriate and practical hands-on money mastery processes. The processes include

teaching materials and games that would help to nurture children in developing the right money habitudes and thus build a strong financial literacy foundation. Equipping children with such tools early in life would create abundant opportunities for their life-long success. At Jopez Academy, research into cognitive science, child development, early childhood education and psychology are used to develop financial educational training materials, curriculum, coaching and training for children aged 4 to 12 years old, their parents and educators. Methodology
Jopez Academy's proprietary methodology money mastery and life mastery--money coaching based on core lifeskills and the values of: being responsible, disciplined, and charitable. It is based on proven research into childhood education, Ernest's research and observations on the family dynamics of his clients and their children, and his own life story, being poor and struggling to make ends meet while bringing up his three children. If you believe todayโ€™s young people need financial literacy education and real-world business skills, JoPeZ Academy is here to help. Sponsorships are also available to provide financial, business, and entrepreneurship education to young people as well as teachers who cannot afford it. Contact us today!

"I don't check my bank balance. If the app lets me pay, it means I have money." ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ’ธ

A teenager told me this recently, and I was shocked.
But honestly... it explains everything.

Today's teens do not have a "spending" problem. They have a "system" problem.

They live in a world where money is completely invisible. They just double-click a button, scan their face, or tap their phone.

Because of this, we see the "spend first, think later" behavior everywhere:

โ“ Do they tap their phone for a $7 bubble tea without thinking twice?
โ“ Do they just check their Shopee cart because there is a โ€œflash saleโ€?
โ“ Do they run out of their monthly allowance in the second week?

As parents, our first reaction is to lecture them.
"You are wasting money! Do you think money grows on trees?"

But a lecture is not a system.
If they do not have a system to manage their money, they will just follow their feelings. And their feelings will always tell them to buy now.

At Jopez Academy, we teach parents to stop scolding and start building systems.

Before they get their next allowance, help them set up the:

3 Jars System (Save, Spend, Share)

On the very first day they receive their money, they must divide it.

10% goes to the "Save" jar immediately.
A small amount goes to โ€œShareโ€.
The rest stays in "Spend".

Once the "Spend" jar is empty, it is empty.
No advances. No emergency top-ups from Mum and Dad.

When you do this, they learn the most important lessons:
โœ… Budgeting
โœ… Delayed gratification
โœ… How to control their impulses

Let them make a $50 mistake today, so they do not make a $50,000 mistake when they are adults.

Parents, if you look at your teen right now...
๐Ÿ‘‡ Comment "SAVER" below to tell us their money personality!

"Mum, if I study hard, will I get a good job and be rich?" ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’ญ

Have your kids asked you this yet?

If you are honest, you might not know what to say.

Because today, parents know the uncomfortable truth:

โ“ A degree no longer guarantees a high salary.
โ“ Knowing the right people (connections) often opens more doors than a perfect exam score.
โ“ Most of the science and math formulas they memorize today will be forgotten by age 20.

As a parent, it is completely normal to feel conflicted.
If the old rules do not work anymore, why do we force them to study so hard?

Here is the mindset shift we teach at Jopez Academy:

We do not study for the syllabus. We study for the character.

When your child struggles with a very hard math problem, they are not just learning math. They are training their brain.

Studying hard is just a training ground to develop:
โœ… Discipline (doing the work even when they feel lazy)
โœ… Problem-solving (figuring out hard things without giving up)
โœ… Resilience (bouncing back from a failed test)

Connections might get them the job interview. But it is character, discipline, and grit that will keep them in the room.

And it is the exact same with money.

We do not teach them to work hard and save money just to hoard cash in a bank.
We teach them to save so they have something much better:

Choices.
Independence.
The freedom to say "No" to a bad boss or a toxic job in the future.

We prepare them not for the exam, but for life.

What do you think? Is character more important than exam grades today?

๐Ÿ‘‡ Comment "CHARACTER" or "GRADES" below and let's talk about it!

Every financial habit starts somewhere and for many children, it starts with curiosity.

At our recent Know Your Money Workshop, children explored money through interactive games, discussions, movement, and practical activities that make financial concepts easier to understand and remember.

Thank you to all the parents who joined us and entrusted us with being part of your child's financial learning journey. We hope everyone left with new ideas, meaningful conversations, and a little more confidence about money.

We're looking forward to welcoming even more families at our next workshop.

"Mum, what is the point of putting money in this jar if I am never allowed to touch it?"

If you have ever tried teaching your child to save, you have probably heard this exact question.

And honestly? They have a point.

To a child, money has only one purpose: to be spent right now. When we tell them to "just save it for the future," it feels like a punishment.

They think:
โ“ Why should I give up my McDonald's meal today?
โ“ Why can't I buy those Roblox Robux right now?
โ“ Where is this money actually going?

If saving feels like throwing money into a black hole, they will hate doing it.

Before we can teach them discipline, we must teach them purpose.

At Jopez Academy, we teach parents a simple mindset shift:

Never let them save for "nothing".

Instead of a generic "Savings Jar", introduce the:

Target Savings Rule

Help them pick a specific, exciting goal. Let them print a picture of it and stick it on the jar.

A new Nintendo Switch game.
A pair of branded sneakers.
A ticket to Universal Studios.

Now, when they put a $10 note into the jar, they are not "losing" money. They are buying a piece of their goal.

They are no longer just keeping money away. They are actively learning:
โœ… Delayed gratification
โœ… Goal setting
โœ… The real value of patience

A child who knows exactly why they are saving will stop asking to touch the money until the goal is reached.

Parents, what is the hardest part about getting your kids to save?

๐Ÿ‘‡ Comment "THE GOAL" if your kids need a target, or "THE TEMPTATION" if they can't resist spending!

Is your teenager ready to manage money confidently before they start earning their own income?

๐Ÿ’ฐ Most teenagers learn algebra in school... but very few are taught how to manage money.

What if your child could start building healthy money habits before entering adulthood?

Our Grow With Money Workshop is designed for youths aged 12โ€“16, where they'll learn practical financial concepts through engaging activities, discussions, and real-life scenarios not just lectures.

If you have a teen who's ready to become more confident with money, this workshop is a great place to start.

School equips us to think analytically, stay focused, work hard and be disciplined. These are valuable life skills that shape who we become.

But here's a question.

Why are we spend so many years learning how to work for money, yet so little time learning how to make money work for us?

The truth is, many of the same qualities that help us succeed in school are also the qualities that help us build wealth.

Analytical thinking helps us make wiser financial decisions.

Discipline helps us stay consistent with saving and investing.

Focus keeps us committed to long-term goals instead of chasing short-term gratification.

Patience allows the power of compounding to work over time.

And perhaps the greatest financial advantage every young person has isn't money at all, it's Time.

The earlier someone begins developing healthy financial habits, the more opportunities they create for their future. That's why financial education shouldn't begin only after graduation or after receiving a first paycheck. It should begin while we're still young.

It was a privilege to spend time with the young men from the Boys' Brigade during our Financial Warrior Workshop, exploring these ideas through discussions and interactive activities.

My hope is that they won't just graduate knowing how to work hard for money, but also understand how to make money work hard for them.

"Dad, can I use my Ang Bao money to buy NVIDIA shares?"

I wouldn't be surprised if more Singaporean parents start hearing this question.

Today's teens are learning about investing from TikTok, YouTube, and their friends in school. They hear stories of people making money from stocks, ETFs, and crypto, and naturally, they want to get started too.

As a parent, it's exciting to see our children interested in investing.

But before we teach them how to grow money, we need to teach them something even more important:

>> How to keep money.

Because if a teenager cannot manage their Ang Bao money, how will they manage an investment portfolio?

Think about it:

โ“ Do they spend most of their Ang Bao money on the latest gadgets, sneakers, or gaming accessories?
โ“ Is their monthly allowance gone before the next top-up?
โ“ Do they frequently ask Mum and Dad for extra money because they overspent on bubble tea, Grab rides, or online shopping?

If the answer is "Yes", then investing may be the second lessonโ€”not the first.

At Jopez Academy, we believe every young investor should first pass the:

>> 10% Savings Challenge

Can they save at least 10% of their allowance or Ang Bao money for three months in a row?

>>> No reminders.
>>> No borrowing from Mum and Dad.
>>> No taking money out halfway.

Because successful investing is not just about finding the next NVIDIA.

It's about developing:
โœ… Discipline
โœ… Patience
โœ… Delayed gratification
โœ… Good money habits

A teenager who can consistently save $10 out of every $100 is already building the mindset needed to become a successful investor.

After all, the first question isn't:

"Which stock should I buy?"

It's: "Can I manage the money I already have?"

Parents, if your child received $5,000 in Ang Bao money today, would you let them invest it immediately?

๐Ÿ‘‡ Comment "YES" or "NOT YET" and tell me why.

Think your 15-year-old is too young to learn about money? โณ

They may already be forming habits that follow them into adulthood.

How they save.
How they spend.
How they handle the feeling of wanting something they cannot afford.

Here is the uncomfortable truth:

We spend years preparing our children to earn a paycheckโ€”but very little time teaching them what to do when it arrives.

And money habits are easier to practise when the stakes are small.

Try the Month-End Challenge:

Instead of giving your teen money every few days, give them their full monthly allowance on Day 1.

Then let them decide:

Save it.
Plan it.
Or spend it all in the first week.

If they run out because of unnecessary spending, do not immediately replace it.

Let them experience the consequence.
Let them review what went wrong.
Then help them create a better plan for next month.

Going broke at 16 with $50 can become a valuable lesson.

Going broke at 26 with $50,000 can become a crisis.

The goal is not to punish them.

The goal is to let them practise managing money while the mistakes are still smallโ€”and home is still a safe place to learn.

How do you give your teen their allowance?
