💰 Your Company Is Making a Profit… So Why Is There No Cash?

Have you ever looked at your company's accounts and thought:

“We made a profit, but where did all the money go?” 🤔

You're not alone.

One of the most common misunderstandings among SME owners is thinking that profit = cash in the bank.

They are actually two different things.

📊 Profit vs Cash Flow

Profit tells you how much your business earned after accounting for income and expenses.

Cash flow tells you how much actual cash is coming into and going out of your business.

For example:

Your company makes S$100,000 in sales, but your customers have not paid you yet.

Your accounts may show revenue and profit — but the S$100,000 isn't sitting in your bank account.

Here are 5 common reasons why profit doesn't equal cash:

1️⃣ Customers haven't paid yet
Your trade receivables may be increasing.

2️⃣ You paid your suppliers
Cash may have gone out before the related sales are collected.

3️⃣ You purchased equipment
Buying computers, machinery or other assets uses cash but is not necessarily recorded as an immediate expense in the Profit & Loss Statement.

4️⃣ You repaid a loan
Loan principal repayments reduce cash but are generally not recorded as an expense.

5️⃣ You took money out of the business
Dividends or other withdrawals can reduce cash without reducing accounting profit in the same way as normal operating expenses.

💡 TASA TRUST TIP

Don't only ask:

“How much profit did we make?”

Also ask:

✅ How much cash do we have?
✅ How much do customers owe us?
✅ How much do we owe suppliers?
✅ What major payments are coming up?
✅ Can the business comfortably meet its next few months of expenses?

A profitable business still needs good cash flow management.

📢 TASA TRUST BUSINESS UPDATE

GST INVOICENOW: IS YOUR BUSINESS READY? 🧾💻

If your business is GST-registered, InvoiceNow is something you should start paying attention to.

IRAS is progressively implementing the GST InvoiceNow Requirement, under which GST-registered businesses will need to transmit invoice data to IRAS through the InvoiceNow network using InvoiceNow-ready solutions.

📌 What does this mean for SMEs?

Instead of simply issuing and receiving invoices through your accounting system, businesses will need to ensure their system can support the required InvoiceNow data transmission to IRAS.

The implementation is being phased in:

🔹 From 1 April 2026
New businesses applying for voluntary GST registration are required to adopt the GST InvoiceNow Requirement.

🔹 From 1 April 2028 onwards
The requirement will progressively extend to other GST-registered businesses based on their annual supplies.

🔹 By 1 April 2031
All remaining GST-registered businesses will be brought into the requirement.

💡 What should your business do now?

✅ Check whether your accounting software is InvoiceNow-ready
✅ Confirm your business's implementation date
✅ Make sure your customer and supplier information is accurate
✅ Review your invoicing process
✅ Start testing the system before your mandatory implementation date

TASA TRUST TIP 💡

Don't wait until the mandatory date to start preparing.

Getting your accounting system and invoicing process ready early can help reduce disruption and give your team time to adapt.

5 Things Every SME Owner Should Check Before Year-End

Year-end is more than just closing the accounts.

Before your financial year comes to an end, taking some time to review your company's records can help you avoid surprises, identify errors and make the year-end accounting process much smoother.

Here are 5 things every SME owner should check:

1️⃣ Bank Reconciliation
Make sure your accounting records agree with your bank statements.

🔎 Check for:
• Unrecorded bank transactions
• Outstanding payments
• Bank charges and interest
• Duplicate or missing entries

2️⃣ Trade Receivables
Do you know exactly how much your customers still owe you?

Review your outstanding invoices and identify any overdue or potentially uncollectible balances.

3️⃣ Trade Payables
Check that all supplier invoices and expenses incurred before year-end have been recorded.

💡 Missing an invoice today could mean missing an expense that belongs to the current financial year.

4️⃣ Expenses
Review your expenses and make sure they are:
✅ Properly supported
✅ Recorded in the correct accounting period
✅ Properly classified

Don't forget to keep the relevant invoices, receipts and payment records.

5️⃣ Supporting Documents
Make sure you have the documents needed to support your accounting records.

📁 Examples include:
• Sales invoices
• Supplier invoices
• Receipts
• Bank statements
• Contracts and agreements
• Payment records

💡 TASA TRUST TIP
Don't wait until your accountant asks for the documents.

A little preparation before year-end can save a lot of time, follow-up and stress later.

🏢 ACRA / CORPORATE COMPLIANCE

4 Things Every Singapore Company Should Check

Running a business is more than just managing sales and cash flow.

Keeping your company’s ACRA filings, statutory records and company information up to date is an important part of staying compliant.

Here are 4 things every Singapore company should check:

✅ 1. Annual Return (AR)
For most non-listed companies, the Annual Return is generally due within 7 months after the financial year end.

✅ 2. Financial Statements
Make sure your financial statements are properly prepared and meet the applicable requirements.

✅ 3. Company Information
Check that your directors, company secretary, shareholders, registered office address and other company information are accurate and up to date.

✅ 4. Statutory Registers
Ensure your statutory registers and records are properly maintained and updated when changes occur.

💡 TASA TRUST TIP
Don't wait until your Annual Return deadline to check your company's records.

A quarterly compliance review can help you identify missing documents, outdated information and upcoming filing requirements early.

📌 Stay compliant. Stay focused on growing your business.
