🇦🇺 For Australians based in Singapore, investing isn’t just about returns, it’s about navigating two tax systems, multiple currencies, and an uncertain time horizon.

In my latest article, we break down the ETF versus property debate through a cross-border lens. The analysis looks at liquidity, leverage, tax exposure, and why long-term structuring matters more than asset selection alone. It also highlights how rules like Section 26AH, often called the “10-year rule,” can influence outcomes when investments are held with discipline.

For expats building wealth across jurisdictions, the right strategy is rarely obvious—but getting it right can materially change long-term results.

🇬🇧 Leaving or returning to the UK? Your tax position may not be as simple as you think.

Split-year treatment UK can make a significant difference to how your income is taxed during the year you move. Get it right and you may avoid unnecessary tax on overseas earnings. Get it wrong and you could face unexpected liabilities and dual tax obligations UK expats often overlook.

In this article, I break down how split-year treatment works, when it applies and the common mistakes British expats make during transitions.

For anyone serious about UK expat financial planning, timing is everything. Working with a financial adviser for British expats can help ensure your move is structured efficiently from both a tax and investment perspective.
If you’re relocating internationally, don’t leave it to chance.

Are ISAs still worth it if you’re living overseas?

For many British expats, the answer isn’t as clear as it once was. While ISAs remain tax-efficient in the UK, their benefits can weaken or even disappear once you become non-resident.

In this article, I explore how ISA for non-residents UK really works, the hidden tax risks across jurisdictions and why relying on UK-based assumptions can lead to costly mistakes.

For those serious about UK expat financial planning, understanding how ISAs fit into a global portfolio is essential. In many cases, working with a financial adviser for British expats can help align your investments with your residency status and long-term goals.

If you’re building wealth abroad, it’s not just about what worked in the UK, it’s about what works where you are now.

Energy shocks don’t just move oil prices, they reshape markets, investor behaviour and long-term portfolio outcomes.

From the stagflation of the 1970s to the demand-driven spike in 2008, history shows a consistent pattern: volatility rises, correlations break down and traditional diversification is tested when it’s needed most. Today’s escalation in the US–Iran conflict, with risks to the Strait of Hormuz, is once again forcing investors to confront those same dynamics.

For globally mobile individuals, the stakes are even higher. Currency exposure, cross-border taxation, and shifting capital flows add layers of complexity that go beyond domestic investing.

The lesson from past crises isn’t to predict the next move. It’s to build resilient portfolios that can withstand multiple scenarios, adapt to changing conditions, and stay aligned with long-term objectives.

In uncertain times, discipline tends to outperform prediction.

Expat life is built on opportunity, but also complexity.

Income streams, currencies, and long-term goals often span multiple countries, making financial protection more than just a checkbox exercise.

Term life insurance, Critical Illness Cover (CIC), and Total & Permanent Disability (TPD) form the foundation of a resilient financial plan. Together, they protect against the biggest risks to wealth: premature death, serious illness, and loss of earning capacity.

For internationally mobile professionals, the details matter. Portability across borders, access to global healthcare, and currency flexibility can make the difference between a policy that works, and one that fails when it’s needed most.

If you’re living and working abroad, it’s worth asking a simple question: does your protection move with you?

The rise of the “stateless investor” is reshaping how wealth is built, managed, and taxed.

More expats are living in places like Singapore while holding assets, income streams, and obligations across multiple jurisdictions. The result is greater opportunity, but also far more complexity.

Traditional advice no longer works in a world where tax systems don’t align, investments span continents, and estate planning crosses legal frameworks. This is where financial planning for expats in Singapore, expat tax advice, and working with a financial adviser for expats becomes essential, not optional.

The real risk isn’t paying tax. It’s not understanding where, when, and why you owe it.

Global wealth requires global thinking.

🇦🇺 Are you an Australian living overseas and assuming you’re no longer a tax resident? That assumption can be costly.

Australia’s residency rules are complex, and many expats, especially those in Singapore, unknowingly remain caught by the system. The result can be unexpected tax bills, compliance issues, and exposure to dual tax obligations.

In this article, I break down the key tax residency test rules used by the Australian Taxation Office, the common mistakes expats make, and how to structure your affairs properly as an Australian tax residency expat.

If you’re serious about financial planning for Australians abroad, understanding your residency status isn’t optional, it’s foundational.

The rules of inheritance tax are changing—and for globally mobile families, the risks are rising.

From April 2025, the UK shifts from a domicile-based system to a residence-based one. Spend 10 out of 20 years in the UK, and your worldwide assets could fall within UK inheritance tax—even years after you’ve left.

At the same time, the US continues to impose estate tax on non-citizens with as little as $60,000 of US-situs assets .

The result? A growing “IHT trap” for British expats in places like Singapore, Dubai, and beyond—where international wealth structures may no longer provide the protection people assume.

The takeaway is simple:
Where you’ve lived now matters as much as where your assets are.

Cross-border estate planning is no longer optional—it’s essential.
