The dividend landed. Tax was deducted. You’re done… right? 💰

It’s an easy assumption to make. You see the money in your account, notice that tax has already been taken out and move on.

But if you’re a Romanian tax resident, there may still be something to check.

🏢 Was the dividend paid by a Romanian company?
The company generally withholds the dividend income tax. However, you may still have a personal obligation to declare and pay CASS -the Romanian health insurance contribution.

🌍 Was it paid by a company abroad?
Foreign withholding does not automatically remove Romanian reporting duties. You also need to check whether - and how - the tax paid abroad can be credited in Romania.

🧩 Do you have other income too?
Dividends, interest, rental income and investment gains can all be relevant to your CASS review. The full-year picture matters.

Here’s a useful habit: keep the dividend statement, not just the bank notification.

Your records should show:
📄 Who paid the dividend.
💰 The amount before tax.
🧾 How much tax was withheld.
📅 When the payment was made.

That makes it easier to understand your position before preparing the annual tax return.

Not sure what the company has handled and what you need to do yourself?

Sold shares. Made a profit. Taxes sorted? Not necessarily. 👀

You open your investing app, check the result and download a statement. It’s easy to assume the paperwork is finished. But what has your broker actually handled - and what still needs your attention in Romania?

If you’re a Romanian tax resident, start with these three questions:

✅ Was Romanian income tax withheld?
Check the details behind any tax shown on your statement.

✅ Do I need to report the gain?
Your reporting duties depend on the tax regime that applies to your transactions.

✅ Is there CASS to consider?
The Romanian health insurance contribution needs a separate check.

You don’t need to solve everything while scrolling through Facebook. Start with one manageable task: create a folder for your investment records.

If you use several platforms, keep a separate section for each. It will be much easier to see what’s available and what you still need to request.

A little clarity now can save a lot of searching later.

Your income is in different places. Is your paperwork too? 📂

A broker statement in an app. Freelance invoices in your inbox. Pension documents in a drawer. And that certificate showing tax paid abroad… somewhere.

Sound familiar?

When it’s time to prepare your Romanian annual tax return, finding the necessary paperwork can become a task of its own.

Make things easier now: create one folder called “2026 Tax Records”, with a separate section for each income category.

Here’s what to collect:

📈 Investments: broker statements, purchase and sale records, transaction fees.
💰 Dividends: statements showing the gross amount, payment date and any tax withheld.
💻 Freelancing: contracts, invoices, payment records and documents supporting business expenses.
🌍 Foreign pensions: pension statements and records of the payments received.
🧾 Foreign tax: certificates or other documents showing the income concerned and the tax paid or withheld.

You don’t need every final annual statement yet. Start with what’s available and keep a short list of what’s missing.

The goal? A clearer picture of your income and fewer documents to chase when your annual tax reporting should start.

Not sure which records matter for your situation? TAX IQ can help review your reporting obligations and prepare your Romanian annual tax return.

What changes after residency?

Let's say Romania considers you a Romanian tax resident. What happens to the income you still receive from abroad?

That's where the concept of worldwide income taxation becomes important.

Depending on the circumstances, that can bring foreign income into the Romanian tax picture - for example:
🏠 rental income
💰 dividend income
📈 capital gains
🌍 other foreign-source income

“But I've already paid tax abroad.” That's an important second question.

A double taxation treaty and mechanisms such as a foreign tax credit may help prevent the same income from being taxed twice, depending on the circumstances.

The sequence matters:
Residency → income → reporting → treaty relief

Your 183rd day is approaching

Been living in Romania for almost six months?

Then your calendar deserves a second look.

The physical presence test (183-day rule) is an important part of the Romanian tax residency - and foreign individuals staying in Romania long term may also need to consider the Romanian tax residency assessment procedure.

But the assessment isn't simply:

Day 182 = one answer
Day 183 = another.

Other relevant circumstances may need to be considered too.

If your 183rd day is getting closer, this is a good time to understand the procedure rather than guess the outcome.

Living here ≠ tax resident

You have a Romanian residence permit.

Does that automatically mean you're a Romanian tax resident?

No.

Immigration residency and tax residency answer two different questions.

🏠 Immigration status concerns your legal right to live in Romania.

📑 Tax residency helps determine which country treats you as resident for tax purposes.

For Romanian tax residency, factors such as physical presence, permanent home and your center of vital interests can become relevant.

Small detail, big impact: don't use your residence permit as a shortcut for determining your tax position.

Receiving the shares isn't the end of the story.

When employees participate in a Stock Option Plan or another share incentive plan, much of the attention naturally goes to receiving the award and eventually acquiring the shares.

But what happens afterwards matters too.

The journey may continue through several stages:

📈 Acquiring the shares – depending on the plan, the employee eventually acquires or receives the shares.

⏳ Holding – the shares may increase or decrease in value over time.

💰 Sale – selling the shares can have Romanian tax implications.

📄 Reporting – the resulting income may also need to be reported in Romania, depending on the circumstances.

Understanding the full journey helps employees know what questions to ask - not only when they receive an equity award, but also when they eventually decide to sell their shares.
