Did you know that the Bible has a powerful lesson about saving during seasons of abundance?
You may have heard of the 50-30-20 budgeting rule.
It goes something like this.
50% of your income should be allotted for your needs and daily expenses such as food, apartment rental, water and electricity bills.
30% of your income should be allotted for your wants, leisure and enjoyment tulad ng travel, dining-out with friends or family, pampering yourself with a massage or a haircut, buying clothes, shoes or gadget or if you just want to buy anything to avoid being burnt-out, all of those, sa 30% mo kukunin.
While 20% naman should be allotted for savings, emergencies and your future and unforeseen expenses.
But here's something interesting. Hear me.
The Bible gives us a very similar principle, not the modern 50/30/20 rule itself but the wisdom behind saving 20% during seasons of abundance.
In Genesis 41, Pharaoh had a very disturbing dream.
Seven healthy, fat cows came out of the Nile, followed by seven thin and sickly cows. Then the thin cows ate the healthy ones.
Imagine that. Grabe. Napakamorbid no?.
And no one could interpret that dream until the cupbearer remembered Joseph, who was in prison that time, can interpret dreams.
So Joseph was called.
Joseph then explained that the seven fat, healthy cows represented seven years of abundance while the seven thin, sickly cows represented seven years of famine.
And that dream represented Egypt experiencing seven years of plenty and abundant years but it will be followed by seven difficult years of famine.
Now, the Pharaoh was very worried so we appointed Joseph to devise a plan.
So what did Joseph recommend?
To save during the good years, to save during the year of abundance.
Joseph instructed the whole Egypt to collect a fifth of the harvest during the seven abundant years and store it for the famine years that would follow.
And a fifth is equivalent to guess what, (drum roll), yes, 20%.
Grabe, the Bible is so amazing!
The lesson is here is simple.
Don't consume everything just because you have enough today.
Don't spend all of your money just because you are experiencing abundance today.
Because the season you are in today may not last forever.
Right now, you may be healthy enough to work.
You may have a stable income.
Your business may be doing well.
You may have opportunities that allow you to earn.
Praise God for that abundance.
Those are all of your seven fat, healthy cows years.
But while you are in your โseven fat cowsโ season or abundant years, you must also prepare for the possibility of your โseven thin cowsโ season.
Not because we should live in fear.
But because wisdom prepares while there is still time.
An emergency.
A disability.
A serious illness.
A major accident.
A loss of income.
A loss of a loved one.
Retirement.
Unemployment.
Old age.
Unexpected responsibilities.
We pray these things don't happen anytime soon but preparation is not a lack of faith.
Sometimes, preparation is one way to steward properly the blessings God has already given us.
So if God has given you something to manage today, don't only ask.
โHow can I enjoy this blessing?"
But also ask,
โLord, how can I steward this blessing wisely?โ
Your income is a blessing.
Your ability to work is a blessing.
Your opportunities are a blessing.
And sometimes, the most faithful thing you can do with today's abundance is to prepare for tomorrow.
And if you are still in your โseven years of abundance,โ please start saving, allot a portion of your income. Save a fifth of your harvest.
Not because you know what tomorrow holds but because God does.
And that's where the 20% came from!

Oh, wait, by the way, most importantly, remember that financial wisdom is not about trusting money. It's about faithfully managing what God has entrusted to you.
