I used to think the hardest part of a serious illness was hearing the diagnosis. The tests. The doctor’s call. The hospital stay.
But a friend made me realize it wasn’t.
It was the Tuesday after they got home.
They were sitting at the kitchen table with an HMO card, a stack of hospital bills, and their family budget open. They weren’t crying. They were just quietly doing the math.
They kept asking questions out loud. “Ilang sessions pa kaya bago maubos ’yung coverage? Paano kung hindi pa makabalik sa work asawa ko? May pang-tuition pa ba? May pambili pa ba ng maintenance? Makakapagpadala pa kaya kami kay Lola?”
Honestly, I didn’t know what to say.
Because nobody really talks about that part.
We always hear, “May HMO naman.” And to be fair, HMO is a huge help. It gets you through the hospital. But when you get home, life doesn’t suddenly become cheaper.
The follow-up checkups keep coming. The maintenance medicines. The special diet. The Grab rides because commuting isn’t an option yet. The extra help at home. The income that suddenly stops while someone is trying to recover.
None of those show up in the HMO booklet, but all of them show up in real life.
That’s when I finally understood the difference.
An HMO helps pay the hospital bill. Critical illness insurance is meant to help protect everything that happens after… the bills that keep coming, the income you lose, and the financial pressure your family has to carry while you’re trying to get better.
The part that really stayed with me is this: most people only realize they need that protection after someone gets diagnosed. But that’s also the moment it’s usually too late to get it.
I genuinely hope none of us ever has to sit at that kitchen table, silently computing which bills can wait and which ones can’t.
