Never kang LUGI sa insurance.

It’s always best for you.

Never get discourage to get one especially if that person won’t provide for you when you get sick.

9 in 10 Japanese families have insurance.
In the Philippines, only 2 in 10 do.

As someone working in the insurance industry, that statistic honestly says more about culture and systems than it does about people.

Japan has one of the highest insurance pe*******on rates in the world not simply because people there earn more, but because preparedness is deeply embedded in their culture. From a young age, Japanese families are taught the importance of discipline, saving, emergency preparedness, and long term planning. Their government, schools, and financial institutions consistently reinforce the idea that protecting the family financially is a responsibility, not an option.

Preparation is normal there.

Meanwhile in the Philippines, most families are raised to become resilient, hardworking, and sacrificial. Filipinos are incredible providers. We work abroad, work overtime, sacrifice sleep, miss holidays, and endure hardship all for our families.

But the reality is many Filipinos were never taught financial preparedness the same way.

Most of us grew up hearing:
ā€œBahala na.ā€
ā€œMakakaraos din.ā€
ā€œOkay lang basta may trabaho.ā€

And to be fair, when you live in a country where many families are already struggling with inflation, low wages, hospital costs, tuition fees, and daily survival, long term financial protection naturally becomes less prioritized.

That is why I never judge people who delay getting insurance. I understand it completely.

But what makes me reflect deeply is this:

According to PAGCOR, around 32 million Filipinos gamble. That means millions of our countrymen are willing to spend money every day for the possibility of a better future, a breakthrough, or a life changing opportunity.

And honestly, I think that says something painful about our society.

Filipinos are not lazy. Filipinos are hopeful.

Many people are simply looking for a way out.

The problem is we were exposed more to gambling than financial education. More people know online betting apps than investment concepts. More people hear about instant winnings than long term protection.

So this post is not about blaming anyone.

It is about changing the conversation.

Because one sickness, one accident, or one unexpected death can instantly wipe out years of sacrifice from a Filipino family. I have personally seen families sell properties, borrow money, and start over from zero because they were financially unprepared for emergencies.

Insurance will never make headlines like a jackpot win does. It is not exciting. It does not promise overnight riches.

But when tragedy happens, it quietly becomes the reason a family survives.

Maybe the goal is not to become Japan overnight.

Maybe the goal is simply for more Filipino families to understand that financial protection is not only for the wealthy. It is for every parent working overtime, every breadwinner sacrificing abroad, every young professional helping their family, and every Filipino dreaming of a better future.

Because real financial progress is not built on luck alone.

It is built on preparation.

If a serious illness happens, who would you rather pay... yourself or your insurance?

Hospital bills can reach millions, while insurance costs only a fraction of that. The difference matters when it counts.

Kaye Abad and Doc Willie Ong both chose to have their cancer treatment in Singapore.

And while many see it as a personal or medical decision, it also reflects a bigger truth—

cancer care is extremely expensive.

Tinuod jud na… once cancer enters your life, it doesn’t just attack your health.
It affects your finances. Your family. Your work. Your future plans.

Treatment in countries like Singapore is advanced, fast, and complete—but the cost is very high. Even in private hospitals here in the Philippines, cancer treatment can quickly drain savings.

That’s why those who are privileged, insured, or financially capable often choose treatment abroad for faster and more specialized care.

But not everyone has that option.

So what happens here in the Philippines?

We have government hospitals and cancer centers that offer free or low-cost treatment. Doctors guide patients where to go, unsa nga process, and what fits their condition and budget.

But reality check…

Libre does not mean easy.

You will wait. You will queue. You will adjust your life around the system.

And for many families, even that ā€œfree optionā€ is still hard to manage.

In our case, we also had to make hard choices.

As much as we want the free option, it’s not always realistic because:

• I still need to work
• We are only a small family handling everything
• My mother needs timely treatment, dili pwede ma-delay
• Responsibilities don’t stop even when illness starts

So decisions become very personal… and very heavy.

And this is what people don’t always see—

Cancer divides reality into ā€œcan affordā€ and ā€œcan’t afford.ā€

And dili jud malikayan na naa jud mag advise—
ā€œDaghan man libre, pwede man mo didto magpa-treat.ā€

Yes, that is true. There are free options. And they help many people.

But the reality is, every patient and every family has different situations—timing, urgency, capacity, and responsibility.

Pero what about those who can’t?

That’s the painful truth.

But even in this reality…

God remains faithful.
Bisag lisod, bisag kulang, bisag way klaro nga next step—He still provides.

So whatever your situation is—

Dili mawala ang paglaom.
Dili mohunong ang pagsalig.

Because at the end of the day, cancer is not just about hospitals or money…

It’s about fighting for life, even when everything feels uncertain. šŸ¤šŸ™
