Stress caused by the pandemic has created a mental health crisis, with a 25% rise in anxiety and depression orders, while access to mental health services has been disrupted. Close to one billion people are living with mental illness, with the majority having no access to care. Mental health impacts communities everywhere.
World Mental Health Day is our opportunity to highlight this issue and raise awareness. To address the problem, the theme for this year is: ‘Make mental health for all a global priority'.
If you wish to help, consider donating to a local crisis centre or volunteering. On a personal level, it is also a good idea to also check on a loved one who has been struggling – meet up for dinner or offer to help them with tasks they find difficult.
You can also get involved by educating yourself on mental illnesses. Or, if you suffer from a mental illness yourself, share your story and experiences on this meaningful occasion.
