Why haven’t I expanded?

It’s a question I get asked a lot. Why not hire staff? Why not grow the business into something bigger?

The truth is, I’m a self-confessed control freak. I like knowing every single one of my clients and the "ins and outs" of their businesses personally.

It’s a bit like farming—you can’t manage a herd properly if you’re never in the cowshed yourself. 🐄

I want to be the one who knows your history and looks after your books every single time. You can be sure your work isn't being handed off to a junior staff member—you get me, every time.

I’d much rather be the "control freak" who is out in the thick of it with you than a director who doesn't even know your name!

So you can be assured, I have no plans of merging or selling out. I’m here for the long haul and will be right here looking after you for at least the next 15–20 years as I love what I do!

10 Years of Primary Accounts: From the Cowshed to the Office 🍾🐄

At the end of this year, Primary Accounts will be 10 years old. But the "why" behind this business didn't start in an office—it started on Farm.

In 2011, after years of working our way through the dairy ranks, we finally bought our own 100 hectare, 200 cow dairy farm in Northland. There was no family help or silver spoons; just years of hard graft to get our own dirt under our feet.

Between 2011 and 2018, we worked hard. We battled through floods, and the kicker was in July 2014, the first cow had just calved and the paddocks, 50% of the farm, turned into salty lakes.

While we were swimming in mud, the Fonterra payout took a dive. We went from $8.40 down to $4.40, and then the crusher: $3.90 💲🤑.

We lived off nothing. We knew exactly what it felt like to check the bank account and wonder how to make the math work.

My youngest had just turned 5, and I made the call to go back to work at an accounting firm. But what I saw there frustrated me. I saw good, hardworking people overpaying for "rubbish" service. I saw business owners who were flying blind, not actually knowing their numbers or how to fix them.

I knew they deserved better. I knew they needed someone who had actually sat at a kitchen table and worried about a $3.90 payout.

So, I started Primary Accounts. Ten years later, I’m still just as passionate about making sure you never overpay for service and that you always know your numbers.

Thanks for being part of the last decade. Here’s to the next one! 🥂

So you will still receive this if you get you WFF as a lump sum.

Today the Government announced a temporary change to the in-work tax credit (IWTC) rate for the period 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 or until the price of 91 petrol is below $3 per litre for four consecutive weeks (whichever is earliest).

The rate will increase by $50 a week (from $97 to $147 a week) for those who are eligible for the full amount of the in-work tax credit.

If you already receive the in-work tax credit, you will automatically get this increase. The first payment with the increased rate will be 7 April for weekly payments and 14 April for fortnightly payments.

You do not need to contact us.

If you currently receive your IWTC payments at the end of the year, you can change this to weekly or fortnightly in myIR. If you keep your payments the same, you will still receive the increased entitlement that you are eligible for at the end of the year

UPDATE - I can now take on a handful of new clients. If you are interested please get in touch ASAP before I close again.

🚨 Current Status: Head down, calculators up! 🧮☕

It’s officially that "crazy" time of year! To make sure every tax return and financial statement gets the attention it deserves, I am not taking on any new clients until the EOFY rush has settled down.

I love helping new clients, but right now, my priority is my current ones. 🏁

Keep an eye on this page—I’ll post an update as soon as I have fresh capacity!

⚠️ Reminder for employers – payroll changes from 1 April

There are a couple of payroll changes coming on 1 April 2026, so it’s worth checking your payroll setup before your first April pay run.

💰 Minimum wage increase
The adult minimum wage is increasing from $23.50 to $23.95 per hour. If you have employees on minimum wage, their pay rates will need to be updated.

📈 KiwiSaver contribution change
The default KiwiSaver rate will increase from 3% to 3.5% for both employees and employers from the first payday on or after 1 April.

🏦 Watch out if you use automatic payments for wages.
Payroll systems like Xero or Paysauce will update the KiwiSaver deductions automatically. However, automatic payments set up in your internet banking won’t change, and because the employee KiwiSaver deduction increases, the net pay amount may change.

That means you may need to update your bank automatic payments so they match the new payroll figures.

If you’re unsure whether this affects your business or need help checking your payroll setup, feel free to get in touch.
