Ever run your Profit & Loss report and see a profit, then check the bank account and wonder where it all went?

You're not imagining things. Profit and cash are two different measures, and there are a few common reasons they don't match up: GST owing, debt repayments, and capital expenditure. None of these show up cleanly on your P&L, but they're all very real money leaving your account.

That's why it pays to run a cash flow report alongside your P&L, not instead of it. One tells you how the business is performing. The other tells you what's actually happening in the bank. Cash is king, after all.

Life admin. It's the stuff most of us know we should sort out, but somehow keeps getting pushed to next month.

That's why we're proud to be taking part in Life Admin: The Stuff You Should Know, a free evening event in Whakatāne on Wednesday 9 September. Our own Shannon Harnett will be joining Julia Foxley and Katie Douglas-Clifford from Craigs Investment Partners, and Carolyn Cooper from Apogee Legal, for some honest, practical conversations about wealth, property, legal matters and planning ahead.
Expect straight-talking sessions on financial structuring, investing well, protecting what you've built, and getting your wills and enduring powers of attorney sorted, followed by a panel discussion and time for your questions.

It's a complimentary evening with light refreshments, held at Apogee Legal, 88 The Strand, Whakatāne, from 5pm. Numbers are limited for catering, so please RSVP by Saturday 5 September.

A budget you set once and forget about isn't much use when things change. And in business, things always change.

We've pulled together a few practical tips for keeping your budget working for you all year, not just at year-end. One of the most useful things you can do is plan for more than one scenario, so you're not caught off guard by a shift in interest rates, a slow quarter, or rising costs.

We help our clients set up budget variations so you can see ahead of time how different scenarios would play out for your business. Read the full tips on our blog:

Practical budget management tips for business owners, plus how budget scenario planning can help you prepare for whatever the market brings.

Inland Revenue has issued a new alert about tax compliance for businesses that pay contractors for labour.

While it's aimed at the horticultural sector, the same rules apply much more broadly — if you're paying contractors, you may have obligations around withholding tax that are easy to get wrong, especially where subcontracting is involved.

We've put together a plain-English rundown of what IRD is looking at and what's worth checking in your own business. Have a read, and if anything feels uncertain, give us a call any time:
