As many of you may be aware Peter is from Sydney - in fact he grew up around Bondi Beach. The horrific scenes from over there hit close to home for him (and us). Our thoughts are with all those impacted, directly and indirectly. It is a terrible reminder of what damage hate and radicalisation combined with deadly weapons can cause. It is a truly sad time.

Christchurch (and New Zealand) saw this combination only too recently.

Heads up for small employers - IRD has now introduced (without much communication) a "policing check" to compare how many payday filings were filed for a period compared to the previous month. Where they believe one is missing they are issuing fines - just not reminders.

We have been advised that if a return isn't going to be required that you should send a web message to IRD to stop/reverse the policing action.

As this isn't uncommon for one employee businesses please be aware of this and if you have any issues resolving please let us know.

We had a surprise visit from a group of Polish tourists doing a walking tour of Taumarunui this morning. They loved our sheep art - and the pair of Redbands inside the door. A lovely interruption to our day!

The Natural Hazards Insurance Act 2023 came into effect on 1 July 2024.

As a result there is now a Natural Hazards premium on insurance policies for residential land. This sits alongside the EQC levy and covers insurance properties for storm, flood and landslip damage up to (currently) $300,000. Claims are managed through your insurer.

Any claims can be denied (in whole or part) where a S72 notice (or its predecessors) is applied on the property. These are recorded by Council's against the property's record of title, and we understand will be triggered by building consents.

We can see the potential for these premiums to be paid on properties and the insurance claim denied. The insurer may not then pay out that part of the claim either - despite premiums being paid.

If you are in an area with a designated flood risk you may want to reconsider those alterations. This has the potential to get very messy.

We've gone renewable!

You may be able to see on our roof at 37 Miriama Street an array of solar panels. We are just waiting (eagerly) on certification to start using them - and then will, when things are sorted with the retailer, selling excess back into the grid. Not a cheap investment but timely as we've just received notification that both the daily (which we can't mitigate) and the tariffs are going up 20% (inflation anyone). Something is broken in our electricity sector :(.

We thank our suppliers ZEN Energy NZ

ZEN solar panels and solar power systems. The latest in environmentally-conscious solar technology. Delivered by a world-class, NZ-owned team.
