Global share markets rose during February despite escalating tensions.

The escalation of tensions in the Middle East is a continuation of geopolitical events since the beginning of the year. Nevertheless, global share markets rose during February. Emerging markets, Europe and Japan were once again among the better performing regions. The US sharemarket was weighed down...

The response of mortgage interest rates to today’s decision has been muted.

Floating and short-term fixed rates have been sticky as a lot of today’s cut in the OCR was already priced-in by the wholesale markets.

The longer-term fixed rates have remained anchored under the influence of global moves in interest rates.

The Reserve Bank have lowered the Official Cash Rate by 50 basis points today as expected. A lot of this was already priced-in by the wholesale markets, as the Reserve Bank observed in their accompanying Monetary Policy Statement. They noted that short-term wholesale rates have fallen since the Augu...

In this month’s Investment Update, Generate KiwiSaver’s Nathan Field takes 5 minutes to share his insights following a trip to the US. He also discusses the Chinese sharemarket and whether Generate invests in China. The key takeaways are:

In the Tech sector every company he saw continues to lean into AI. There is still a lot of innovation, investment and excitement. AI is going to be at the core of technology for a long time to come.

In the Financial Services sector, banks were quite upbeat and not seeing any problems in credit or delinquencies. They are optimistic going into next year with the prospect of declining interest rates.

As things stand today, it was a positive take on the state of the US economy.

Regarding the US election, it is the uncertainty rather than the outcome which markets dislike most.

China’s comprehensive stimulus package was viewed positively by investors. There is a lot of upside if the Chinese government gets it right this time.

July witnessed several market moving events leading to high levels of volatility.

Market volatility, as we have experienced recently, can be expected at the time of Fed policy pivoting, given increased economic uncertainty.

This has also come after a period of strong gains from global shares and some short-term weakness would not surprise. On a longer-term view, a reduction in interest rates should be positive for global sharemarkets.

Fixed income offers stability of income and the potential for capital gains from further declines in interest rates.

July witnessed several market moving events leading to high levels of volatility. Except for large cap US technology companies, which declined in value over the month, the volatility was generally to the positive side with both fixed income and equity markets delivering positive returns. Events over...

I have had a couple of enquiries over the past week about an article on Stuff expressing concern that KiwiSaver members are at risk from having “all your money invested with one manager”.

I have given this some thought and it is not something that particularly concerns me.
