As part of last week's Government Budget announcement, additional funding has been provided to Inland Revenue to help recover unpaid tax debts.

If you have overdue tax, now may be a good time to review your position and take action before IRD becomes more proactive with collections.

Do you run a charity, small club, or community organisation?

Then these changes from the recent Government Budget announcements might be relevant to you...

If you operate a taxable not-for-profit:
The tax-free income threshold is increasing from $1,000 to $10,000. Meaning many smaller groups won't need to worry about tax on modest earnings.

Membership fees remain tax-free:
Membership subscriptions and levies received by clubs, societies, and other not-for-profits will continue to be exempt from income tax, providing certainty for organisations planning ahead.

Donation tax credits will be easier to access:
People who donate to charities will be able to receive their donation tax credits sooner, rather than waiting until the end of the tax year. A new option will also allow donors to pass their tax credit back to the charity, helping charities receive even more support.

Simpler payments to volunteers:
Small payments made to volunteers will be easier for organisations to manage, reducing administration and making the rules clearer.

These changes are designed to reduce paperwork and support the valuable work that charities and community groups do throughout New Zealand.

Last Thursday, our Government announced several tax and business changes in the 2026 Budget.

As promised, here are the key updates in easy to understand terms...

Company vehicle tax rules are being simplified:
If your company provides vehicles that can be used privately, the paperwork and record-keeping requirements are expected to become easier. This removes the requirement for detailed logbooks (we know you all love it when I’ve told you it’s time for a new one!)

Some tax calculations are being simplified:
Rules that can be complex for businesses dealing with loans, financing arrangements, or certain contracts are being reviewed to make them easier to apply.

Changes for overseas investments:
Thresholds for some foreign investment rules are increasing from $50K to $100K. Meaning fewer people may be caught by these rules and reporting requirements.

Most of these changes still need legislation and further detail, so we'll be keeping a close eye on developments and letting clients know when action is needed.

If you're unsure whether any of these changes affect you, get in touch with us for a chat!

Also, make sure your industry classification is correct — it affects what you pay. Not sure? We’re happy to check it for you.

For sole traders/self-employed - yours should be on its way in September.
