2026 Herd scheme values have been released 📢

Inland Revenue have released the latest National Average Market Values (NAMV), otherwise known as herd scheme values, for the 2025/26 tax year.

These values reflect significantly higher livestock prices, underpinned by strong market conditions, and signal a positive outlook for the sector as improved pricing and confidence support on-farm profitability.

With increases across sheep, beef, and dairy, now is a timely opportunity to review your livestock numbers, valuation approach, and expected tax position. 🐄 🐑

See below for a summary of the updated values.

Someone once told us the most rewarding thing you can do at work is help someone else figure out they're actually really good at something. We take that seriously and now we're looking for someone who feels the same way.

We're on the hunt for our next Team Manager at McIntyre Dick. This is the person who will lead an operational team and work alongside our trainees and early-career accountants to support their growth. You'll shape careers, build confidence, and be a key part of delivering quality support to our clients.

If you've got a solid accounting background (public practice experience would be ideal), a genuine love of developing people, and the kind of leadership style that makes others better, we'd love to hear from you.

💡 Big Tax Changes Are Coming – What You Need to Know (2026 Budget Edition)

The Government has released a wave of proposed tax changes in the 2026 Budget – and they could affect businesses, investors, families, and not-for-profits right across New Zealand.

🔍 For businesses:
Compliance could get easier. Non-resident contractor rules are being simplified, thresholds lifted, and some low-risk entities may be excluded altogether.
Plus, fringe benefit tax on vehicles is getting a major overhaul with a simpler category system—no more counting days!

🚀 For innovation:
Startups could benefit from improved cashflow through earlier R&D tax incentive payments and more flexible admin rules.

🌍 For investors & migrants:
New rules aim to reduce uncertainty from foreign exchange fluctuations and make investing in overseas shares simpler and fairer.

🏠 For families:
Working for Families is being simplified, making it easier to understand entitlements and reducing admin headaches.

❤️ For charities & not-for-profits:
Changes include caps on donation tax credits, higher tax-free thresholds for smaller organisations, and simpler tax return filing rules—freeing up more funds for community impact.

💰 For shareholders & financial structures:
New rules will tighten up shareholder loans still owing upon a company wind up, ensuring unpaid shareholder loans are taxed more consistently.

🏦 Behind the scenes:
Updates to banking and investment rules aim to protect the tax base and ensure fair tax outcomes across complex financial arrangements.

Straight up, no nonsense workshops, with practical tools to handle stress, clear your head and stay on top of things before they get too much.

The workshops are run by Samantha McBride, a wellbeing coach who works with rural and hands-on blokes, and who keeps things practical and real.

📢 Ash Burdon was back at Ag Pathways last week, and it's easy to see why this programme keeps growing.

Rabobank's Ag Pathways brings together driven young farmers for two intensive days of skills, mentoring and real-world knowledge from some of the South Island's most experienced agricultural operators.

Ash leads both the communication skills workshop and the business planning component, challenging participants to get focused on three things: why they're in their industry, where they want to go, and what values will guide their decisions along the way.

We're proud to support the future of farming in our region. If you'd like to know more about business planning or other services Ash has to offer, reach out today! Give us a call on 03 211 0801 or reach out to Ash on [email protected]

🐮Starting Contract Milking on 1 June 2026?
Make sure your finances are ready!

Stepping into contract milking this coming season is a big move. More responsibility, more independence, and the chance to build your own farming business.
But before you get underway, ask yourself "are your financial affairs in order?".

📃Get your business structure set up properly, whether that’s sole trader, partnership, or company.
💲Make sure you’ve got a solid budget, understand your true costs, and have your GST and tax systems sorted.
💲Make sure you’re fully registered with IRD before the season starts. It’ll save you stress later.
💡 Have your contract checked, build a good support team, and know your numbers!

If you’re not sorted yet, call us on 📲 03 211 0801 or email [email protected]. It’s far better to set things up right now than fix problems mid-season.
