CELEBRATING OUR PEOPLE – ANGEL BATY 👩‍🎓
- Powered by Dreams, Strengthened by Whānau

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate our staff member, Angel Baty, who graduated this week from Massey University with a Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) degree.

Driven, resilient and deeply connected to her roots, Angel’s journey reflects her incredible determination, commitment and the solid support of her loving whānau.

A truly inspiring achievement, and a reminder that with clear goals, belief in yourself and a strong support system and networks around you, anything is possible.

What a fantastic afternoon at Okare Station last week! 🌿

Jen Mildenhall, (BDO Gisborne Agribusiness Director), had the privilege of joining an incredible group to deliver a "Budget Knowhow for Farm Staff" session. Real conversations, practical tips and a room full of people genuinely invested in building financial confidence in our rural communities.

We covered a lot of ground:
✅ Why starting to save early can make a $350,000+ difference to your future
✅ Watching your spending
✅ Setting meaningful financial goals - because without a goal, money just disappears
✅ Knowing your numbers and asking: does this spending get me closer to where I want to be?
✅ Looking beyond your wages for extra income opportunities.

Thanks to the incredible collaborators who made this event happen: Steph & Angie from Wairoa Financial Literacy Services, Chloe Butcher-Herries, Ali Forbes from Beef + Lamb New Zealand, and Chris Wills from Rural Support Trust Wairoa.

Time is a superpower when it comes to money. Start small, start early and give yourself choices down the track.

CELEBRATING REGIONAL SUCCESS ON A NATIONAL LEVEL🌱

BDO Gisborne congratulates our client Tairāwhiti Whenua Charitable Trust on winning the Gallagher Innovative Farming Award at the 2026 Beef + Lamb New Zealand Awards this week.

This achievement reflects the power of collective mahi across whenua Māori entities in Te Tairāwhiti - working together to grow, protect and sustain our whenua for future generations to come.

We are so proud to support this kaupapa – recognising the tireless efforts of many key people over the years, whilst also celebrating the positive impact that can be achieved through collaboration.

Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa – Let us keep close together, not far apart 🤝

🥁 Drum roll…The 2026 Gallagher Innovative Farming Award goes to … Tairāwhiti Whenua Charitable Trust🏆

Tairāwhiti Whenua Charitable Trust set out to unite Māori landowners, shareholders, governance entities and farmers into a single, coordinated network in the wake of the devastation wrought by Cyclone Gabrielle.

Formed to take a collective approach to Māori land ownership and governance, Tairāwhiti Whenua Charitable Trust represents more than 800,000 hectares of collective whenua and affiliated landholdings across Te Tairāwhiti and beyond.

The Trust has developed a region wide Māori-led collective impact model that combines technical mapping, policy design, local wānanga, practical projects and strategic advocacy into one coherent system of change for sheep and beef country and its communities.

Judges commented that the Tairāwhiti Whenua Charitable Trust was an impressive example of collaboration and leadership delivering multiple tangible results for rural communities.
They said the organisation demonstrated innovation at a grand scale and added that the Tairāwhiti Whenua Charitable Trust generated fantastic economic, environmental and social benefits.

Congratulations! 👏

🔥2026 Young Enterprise Scheme Mid-Year Pitch Challenge 🔥
- Empowering Young Entrepreneurs

At BDO Gisborne, we’ve proudly supported the YES programme in our region since 2020, and we’re constantly blown away by the high standard of creativity and innovation on display from our future business leaders.

The Mid-Year Pitch Challenge is all about giving rangatahi the opportunity to share where their business ideas are at, and more importantly, for them to receive constructive feedback to help guide the next phase of their journey.

Today four members of our team, Alex Cochrane, Ella Sutherland, Angel Baty and Ashleigh Harding, had the privilege of sitting on the judging panel. They were fantastic in providing thoughtful and practical advice with supportive conversations to help build confidence and capability.

At the end of the day, it is not just about the final scores, it’s about the kōrero, the whakaaro shared, and the guidance that helps these young entrepreneurs progress forward.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the efforts of our fabulous YES Regional team, Nikita Skipper and Yolande Rosario, and our warmest regards to the four teams that pitched today, and the teaching staff that supported them.

We’re excited to see where these ventures progress to next.
