Anyone thinking about migrating to New Zealand or bringing overseas funds in should consider advice before proceeding. I have worked with Julia in the past and her knowledge was extremely beneficial. Of course, once the funds are here you talk to me about investing it 😀
We are often asked how a tax lawyer is different to their accountant. We are not a substitute for your accountant. An accountant generally prepares your tax returns and can provide business advisory advice. A tax lawyer analyses the law. We write tax opinions which assist clients and their accountants to make decisions for the future. We assist with structuring your affairs in a tax efficient but legal manner. We advise clients and their accountants the correct way to interpret the law to account for tax in New Zealand. We work with a lot of accountants and business advisers who do the numbers and business plans based on the legal advice we provide. As lawyers, we also benefit from legal privilege which accountants do not. This is highly beneficial during a dispute with Inland Revenue, or for any advice relating to a proposed business venture or structuring. We work with accountants and other advisers to ensure the best tax outcomes in a commercial environment. While we can advise in all areas of tax, we focus on international tax issues for migrants and corporations, as well as property tax and IRD disputes.
