πŸ“’ Budget 2026: What the Tax Changes Mean for You
The Government's Budget was announced today, and there are two tax changes that could affect everyday Kiwis. Here's what they actually mean in plain English:

1. Investing overseas just got easier 🌏
If you invest in overseas shares or funds (like through Sharesies or similar platforms), there's a rule called the Foreign Investment Fund (FIF) regime that kicks in once your investments go over a certain amount β€” and it means more complicated tax calculations and potentially a bigger tax bill.
That limit used to be $50,000. From now on, it's $100,000.
So if you've been nervous about putting more than $50k into overseas investments because of the tax headache, you've now got more breathing room. For couples, that could mean up to $200,000 invested before the more complex rules apply.

2. Ute tax gets a rethink πŸš—
Businesses that provide vehicles to employees pay something called Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT). The old rules were complicated and heavily based on what type of vehicle it was β€” which is why utes became so popular (they often got a tax break that other vehicles didn't).
The new rules focus on how the vehicle is actually used for work, not what it looks like. This levels the playing field β€” including for electric vehicles, which could now qualify for the same tax breaks as utes if they're used for work purposes.
This could be great news for businesses looking to go electric. More EVs in business fleets also means more affordable second-hand EVs on the market for everyone else down the track.

Not sure how any of this affects you? That's what we're here for β€” give us a call or drop us a line and we'll talk it through in plain English, just like this. 😊

πŸ“£ Important KiwiSaver change for employers – effective 1 April 2026 πŸ“£

This is a proactive reminder that KiwiSaver contribution rates are changing.

From 1 April 2026, the default KiwiSaver contribution rate for both employees and employers will increase to 3.5%, following changes announced by the New Zealand Government.

What employers should do now:
βœ”οΈ Review payroll settings
βœ”οΈ Factor the increase into future wage and payroll cost planning
βœ”οΈ Ensure systems are ready ahead of 1 April 2026

πŸ‘‰ If we process your payroll, you don’t need to do anything β€” we will automatically update your payroll settings to reflect this change.

If you manage payroll yourself and would like support reviewing your setup or understanding how this change affects your business, get in touch β€” we’re happy to help 😊
