𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴

The Employment Leave Act 2026 will replace the Holidays Act from 6 August 2028, significantly changing how employee leave is earned, recorded and paid.

Key updates include:

• Annual and sick leave will accrue in hours from an employee’s first day
• Sick leave will be proportionate to an employee’s standard hours
• A clearer test will apply when determining public holiday entitlements
• Alternative leave will accrue hour for hour when an employee works on a public holiday that would otherwise be a working day
• Leave payments will use a more consistent hourly calculation

Nothing changes yet, employers must continue following the current Holidays Act until August 2028. However, it is worth understanding the changes and checking that your payroll records are accurate.

Could it happen to your business or charity?

Most fraud doesn't happen because business owners, managers or trustees are careless. It happens because they're busy. When one trusted person is responsible for the entire payment process, it can create opportunities for both internal fraud and increasingly sophisticated invoice scams.

In our latest blog, we explain why small businesses and charities are particularly vulnerable, highlight a recent New Zealand example, and share practical steps you can take to reduce the risk and better protect your organisation.

Have you bought cryptocurrency at some point over the last few years?

You're not alone. What often catches people out, however, is that the tax rules are not always as straightforward as they expect. Many investors who have never considered themselves traders can still create taxable events through everyday crypto transactions.

Our latest blog explains some of the most common misconceptions and why cryptocurrency is becoming a growing tax blind spot for many professionals.

Buying into a medical practice can be a significant career and financial decision, but what are you actually paying for?

While many prospective buyers focus on fees or patient numbers when valuing a practice, the real value often lies in the future maintainable earnings (profits) the practice can generate, along with important factors such as the other owners, practice culture, patient base and long-term strategy.

We explore how medical practices are commonly valued, what to look for in the financial statements, and the key questions to ask before committing to a buy-in opportunity: https://theaccountinghub.co.nz/what-are-you-buying-when-you-buy-into-a-medical-practice/

𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 – 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝘂𝗽?

Investing has never been more accessible. From shares and ETFs to managed funds and cryptocurrency, Kiwis have more opportunities than ever to grow their wealth.

But while there's no general capital gains tax in New Zealand, that doesn't mean every investment profit is tax-free. Overseas investments, PIE funds and crypto can all have very different tax rules and getting it wrong can be an expensive surprise.

Thinking about investing or already have a portfolio? We can help you understand the tax implications so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

If your business purchased new assets during the last financial year, such as vehicles, equipment, office fit-outs, tools, technology or machinery, you may be able to benefit from the new Investment Boost rules.

Investment Boost allows businesses to claim a larger tax deduction upfront in the first year an asset is purchased, helping improve cashflow earlier rather than waiting for deductions to be spread evenly over several years.

For example, instead of claiming a standard 20% depreciation deduction each year on a $100,000 asset, Investment Boost allows a significantly larger deduction in year one. While the total deductions over the life of the asset stay the same, the earlier tax savings can make a meaningful difference.

If you made capital purchases during the 2026 financial year, make sure these are included as part of your year-end accounts process - or ask us.

We’re well into the new financial year, so now is a good time to ask, do you have a clear budget for the year ahead, or are you mostly hoping the numbers work themselves out?

Budgeting is one of those business basics that is easy to put off, especially when things are busy. But without a clear plan, it becomes much harder to make confident decisions around staffing, pricing, spending or growth. A budget gives you something to measure against throughout the year, rather than simply hoping the numbers improve.

In our latest blog, we look at a practical way to build a budget using last year’s figures as a starting point, along with how to track your progress using budget variance reporting in Xero.

Even a simple budget can give you much better visibility over where your business is heading.

Working from home or using part of your house for business? You may be able to claim home office expenses and the process might be simpler than you think.

The Inland Revenue square metre rate method can reduce the need to manually calculate and apportion every household bill, making it much easier to work out your claim each year.

In our latest blog, we explain how the square metre rate works, what costs are covered, and what information you’ll need to provide. Read more here: https://theaccountinghub.co.nz/square-metre-rate-for-calculating-your-home-office-expenses/
