Mortgage rates are starting to move higher, and some of the major banks have already increased their rates.

So what does that mean if you've got a mortgage?

In this video, Rupert explains why rising inflation and global events could put further pressure on interest rates, and why it might be worth reviewing your fixing strategy sooner rather than later.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming today's rates will still be available tomorrow.
Have you got a mortgage coming up for refixing in the next 12 months?

This isn’t about politics: it’s about reality.

The pension system is under pressure. And whether it’s means-testing, age changes,
or something else…Change is coming.

The question is: will you be ready for it?

The Reserve Bank left the Official Cash Rate (OCR) unchanged yesterday.

But that's not the full story.

The stronger signal was that interest rates are likely to rise sooner than expected - and some banks have already started increasing mortgage rates.

If you've got a mortgage, are refixing soon, or simply want to understand what this means for your money, we've broken it down in this carousel.

Because while the OCR stayed the same, your mortgage rate might not.

The problem with interest rates isn’t just the number.

It’s the uncertainty.

Not knowing whether your repayments could jump again in 3 months makes it hard to budget, plan, or feel financially secure.

For a lot of Kiwis right now, certainty has value too - even if it’s not the absolute cheapest rate possible.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with KiwiSaver is treating it like a bank account instead of an investment.

Markets will go up.
Markets will go down.
That’s normal.

What matters more is whether your investment strategy actually aligns with:
• your goals
• your timeframe
• your comfort with risk

The people who usually struggle most during market volatility are often the ones who never fully understood what they were invested in to begin with. Taking the time to understand your KiwiSaver plan now could make a huge difference to your long-term outcome later.

This morning, the Kōura Wealth team hosted our very first Pink Ribbon Breakfast 💗

As a team, we came together over croissants and coffee to support Breast Cancer Foundation NZ and raise awareness for the 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer every day in Aotearoa.

We’re proud to share that the Kōura team raised $355 internally - well above our original target 🙌

A big thank you to everyone in the office who got behind it and contributed to such an important cause. Every dollar helps fund education, patient support, and vital breast cancer research here in New Zealand.

New Zealand’s productivity problem runs deeper than just bad roads or slow systems.

At the core of every growing economy are two things:
• affordable energy
• competitive banking

When electricity is expensive and large profits are extracted from the financial system, it becomes harder for businesses to grow, hire, invest, and innovate.

Countries that perform well economically tend to treat infrastructure differently.
They see energy, banking, and investment systems as tools to fuel growth — not just profit centres.

This isn’t just a macroeconomic conversation either.
These systems shape everyday life more than people realise:
• the cost of living
• business confidence
• wages and jobs
• long-term investment opportunities

Understanding how the economy works won’t solve every problem - but it can help people make smarter long-term financial decisions within it.

Fear has a way of making every financial decision feel urgent.

When prices rise and everyone starts reacting at once, it can create a cycle:
people rush in → demand increases → prices climb → quality and service can suffer. That doesn’t mean solar is a bad decision. It just means timing and patience matter.

The same thing happens across investing and financial markets all the time.
The people who usually come out ahead aren’t the ones reacting fastest, they’re the ones making calm, informed decisions.

Don’t let short-term panic drive long-term financial choices.

Turns out calling the end of markets again was a bit premature.

Meanwhile AI spending keeps accelerating, consumers are still spending money, and markets are back near record highs.

Safe to say the mood’s changed pretty quickly.

When a handful of banks make billions every year, while everyday Kiwis struggle with mortgages, business lending and rising costs… people are gonna start asking questions.

Because this isn’t just about profits - it’s about whether the system is actually working for New Zealanders. We need:

- More transparency.
- More competition.
- More support for local banking.

Feels like the bare minimum, right?
