Recently, we celebrated Dad’s 80th birthday, and it had me thinking about the quiet lessons that stay with you.

Growing up, I thought my Dad was a bit like Thor.

Strong.
Capable.
Brave.

Able to handle whatever life brought his way.

But as I’ve got older, I think the real magic was in the simple things he lived every day.

Work hard.
Be brave.
Look after your people.
Do the job properly.
Keep showing up.

Those lessons have quietly shaped the way I run OMS.

Because bookkeeping and business support are never just about numbers on a screen.

They are about being reliable.
They are about helping people feel clearer.
They are about having your clients’ backs.
They are about being steady when business feels full, busy, or uncertain.

A little payroll reminder for NZ businesses.

King’s Birthday falls on Monday 1 June 2026, so it is a good time to check your public holiday payroll before the long weekend arrives.

The key question is:

Would this employee normally work on a Monday?

If yes, they are usually entitled to a paid day off.

If they work on King’s Birthday, they must be paid at least time and a half for the hours worked. If Monday is normally their working day, they are usually entitled to an alternative paid holiday as well.

If Monday is not their usual workday, they usually do not receive a paid day off, unless they are working and specific rules apply.

These little payroll details matter. They help protect your team, your records, and your business.
