KFC vs KKFC — An 8-Year Trademark Battle Just Ended. But Did It Really? 🤔
Back in 2017, a local Nepali brand — KKFC — applied to register its trademark.
KFC immediately objected. Their argument: an extra “K,” similar business category, similar brand colors — a clear attempt to create consumer confusion.
KKFC’s counter-argument: this is an independent identity.
The verdict, after 8 years:
👉 Department of Industry ruled in KFC’s favor
👉 KKFC barred from operating under this name and logo presentation
👉 KKFC ordered to pay KFC NRs 1,00,000 in compensation
8 years of operating under a similar brand. NRs 1 Lakh compensation.
Does this reflect a genuine deterrent — or a gap in our trademark enforcement framework?
Is this the end for KKFC? No.
They have two paths forward:
1️⃣ Rebrand with a new name and logo
2️⃣ Appeal the decision at Patan High Court
This case isn’t isolated. Nepal’s market has long featured lookalike brands — Club Cola, Center Fillz, Maintan Dew — operating in the shadow of global names.
The bigger question for Nepal’s business ecosystem:
Does this ruling signal a genuine shift toward stronger IP enforcement — or does the modest penalty suggest copycat branding remains a low-risk, high-reward strategy?
