Choosing the right bookkeeping software can save you hours each month - but the best option depends on your business size.

For freelancers / ZZP:
You need simple, affordable software with strong bank feeds and easy VAT.
Recommended: Moneybird, Yuki (basic).

For small businesses (3–20 employees):
You’ll benefit from multi-user access, better reporting, and project or inventory support.
Recommended: Moneybird Premium, Exact Online, Twinfield.

For growing companies and scale-ups:
You may need consolidation, multi-entity, multi-currency, and deeper integrations.
Recommended: Exact Online Advanced, Unit4, SAP Business ByDesign.

The right software depends not just on where you are today, but where you’re heading. If you’re unsure which system fits your business, I’m happy to help you compare options.

Have you ever wondered whether your activity counts as a ‘real business’ or just a hobby in the eyes of the Belastingdienst?

This is especially important if you have a side business alongside a job, or if your income is still irregular.

Some things the Belastingdienst looks at when deciding if you are an entrepreneur for tax purposes:
- Do you intend to make a profit over time?
- Do you work for multiple clients or mainly one?
- Do you spend a substantial amount of time on your activity?
- Do you take financial risk (for example: investments, stock, subscriptions, tools)?
- Do you present yourself as a business (website, socials, Chamber of Commerce registration, invoices)?

Why does this matter?
- If it is treated as a hobby, you normally do not charge VAT, and your losses are not deductible in the same way.
- If it is treated as a business, you may have to charge VAT and file returns, but you might also benefit from things like business deductions and allowances.

If you are unsure whether the Belastingdienst will see you as a hobbyist or an entrepreneur, it is worth checking this early. It can save you from surprises later.

If you would like someone to look at your situation with you, I am happy to help.

Have you recently started your own business, or are you running a side business to earn some extra income?

If your annual revenue is under €20,000, this is important for you.

You may qualify for the Kleineondernemersregeling (KOR) - a VAT scheme designed for small businesses in the Netherlands.

Under the KOR:
- You don’t charge VAT to your customers.
- You don’t need to submit VAT returns.
- But you also can’t reclaim VAT on your business expenses.

The KOR can simplify your administration, but it’s not always the best choice.

If you mostly work with other businesses (B2B) or have significant expenses with VAT, joining the scheme might end up costing you more.

Also note, if your turnover exceeds €20,000, you’ll need to switch back to charging VAT.

If you’re unsure whether the KOR is the right fit for your business, I can help you review your numbers and decide what makes the most sense.

3 Common Bookkeeping Mistakes I See All the Time (and How to Avoid Them)

Running a small business is hard enough without stressing over financial admin. I wanted to share some of the common bookkeeping mistakes to try to avoid to save time & money. Being a small business owner myself, I also need to constantly remind myself of these!

1. Mixing personal and business expenses
- Open a separate business bank account to keep things clean and compliant.
2. Forgetting VAT (BTW) deadlines
- Missing even one deadline can lead to fines. I help clients stay on top of this so nothing slips through the cracks.
3. Using software, but not using it well…
- Tools like Xero and QuickBooks are brilliant — but only if they’re set up properly. I try to help clients make this process as automated as possible to reduce mistakes and time.

If you’re a small business owner in Amsterdam and want to tidy things up (or stop dreading tax season altogether), let’s talk!

Why I Started Segers Bookkeeping

After nearly a decade working in public accounting — I realised something was missing.

I loved the technical side of the job, but really what I’m passionate about is connecting with people. Hearing about their businesses, their ideas, their aspirations.

I saw how many small businesses, freelancers, and creatives were overwhelmed by bookkeeping and compliance — and I knew I could help. Not just with the numbers, but by being a reliable partner who understands their world.

So I took the leap and launched Segers Bookkeeping.

I now work with freelancers, expats, and small businesses in Amsterdam, helping them stay financially organised, compliant, and confident. Whether it’s monthly bookkeeping, VAT returns, or annual accounts — I aim to make it feel simple, clear, and stress-free.

Starting your own business can feel scary — I know because I’m doing it too. But I also know that with the right support, you can grow something meaningful and sustainable.

If that’s what you’re building, and you’d like a partner who gets it — I’d love to chat.

Let’s grow together.
