Amaka had her best month yet.
New clients. Big invoices. Revenue that looked better on paper than it ever had before. She went to bed on January 31st feeling like the business had finally turned a corner.

Then February arrived.
Rent was due. Salaries were due. The supplier she had been managing carefully was now firmly out of patience. And the ₦2 million invoice she had raised in January? On 60-day payment terms. Arriving in March.

So what is cash flow, in plain English?
Cash flow is the movement of money into and out of your business, and critically, the timing of both.
It is NOT the same as profit.

Profit is what your business earns after expenses, on paper, based on what you have invoiced and what you have spent.

Cash flow is what is actually sitting in your account, based on what has been paid and what has gone out.
You can be profitable and broke at the same time. That is not a contradiction. That is a cash flow gap.

Three things determine your cash flow health:
Money IN: payments received, not just invoiced
Money OUT: payments made, obligations settled
Timing: when each one actually happens
Manage all three, and your business never gets caught off guard.

Ignore the timing, and even a growing, profitable business can run out of runway.

I am going to say something a lot of Nigerian business owners are not ready to hear.

Your spreadsheet is not your accounting system. It is a tracking tool. And there is a very important difference between the two.

Here is how this usually goes. The business starts. Things are simple. You open Excel or Google Sheets, and you start tracking income and expenses. It works. It feels organised. You feel in control.

Then the business grows. Transactions multiply. Someone else needs access. A formula breaks, and you don't know where. You try to generate a P&L and realise you don't actually have the structure for one. An investor asks for your financials, and you send them an Excel file, and something shifts in the energy of that conversation.

A spreadsheet cannot do what a real accounting system does.
It has no audit trail. It cannot automatically generate financial statements. It breaks under multiple users. It is as accurate as the last person who touched it, and you won't always know when it stopped being correct.
