Bank Negara Malaysia is expected to tighten its policy rate by a quarter point for the fourth time in a row on Nov 3 (Thursday) due to the risk of continued rising inflation, and to support a weakening currency, according to a Reuters poll.

Bank Negara started raising rates in May even though inflation was in the target range of 2% to 3%. Since then, it has raised rates by 75 basis points to control inflation.

In September, inflation eased slightly to 4.5% from 4.7% in August but robust domestic demand and an accommodative budget posed risks.

In addition, the possibility of a 75 basis point hike by the United States Federal Reserve in November is also getting higher. This is not a good sign for the Malaysian ringgit, especially when international reserves are also on a steady decline.

The Malaysian ringgit has declined by around 12% this year.
Two economists – at Barclays and UOB – expect BNM not to make an immediate decision at the meeting given the weakening global outlook and to assess the impact of cumulative hikes.

Almost 90% of economists surveyed predicted BNM would raise rates in the first quarter (Q1) of next year, including two economists who called for a "pausing period" in November, giving a median forecast of 3.00%.

While 13 out of 18 economists forecast a rise of 25 basis points in Q1, three forecasts a rise of 50 basis points. Two economists predict no movement.
