Plywood Manufacturing: Your PCF Data Can Reveal More Than Carbon
For a plywood manufacturer, PCF data is not just about calculating kg CO₂e per product. It can also help you understand where energy is going across your production process.
According to UNIDO, plywood manufacturing uses:
Thermal energy — steaming, drying and pressing 🔥
Electrical energy — peeling, drying, sorting and pressing ⚡
Fuel — internal transportation 🚚
So instead of only collecting data for the PCF calculation, your factory can start connecting:
Energy → Process → Production Output
What should you look at?
1️⃣ Drying
Drying is an important energy-consuming stage in plywood production. In one CORRIM plywood manufacturing model, 77% of thermal energy was allocated to drying. That makes drying energy worth monitoring rather than treating it as just another utility bill.
2️⃣ Energy per production output
Don't only look at total electricity or fuel consumption.
Try comparing: Energy consumed ÷ plywood produced
This gives you an energy-intensity view and makes it easier to see whether energy use changes when production volume changes.
3️⃣ Process-level data
Instead of having one monthly electricity number, consider separating data where practical:
Drying | Pressing | Peeling | Other production processes
This can help you identify which stages deserve further investigation.
Here's where PCF becomes useful:
PCF Data → Identify Hotspots → Investigate the Process → Find Improvement Opportunities
The GHG Protocol specifically states that product carbon accounting can help companies identify hotspots and the greatest GHG reduction opportunities, while potentially improving efficiency and reducing costs.
So the real question for a plywood manufacturer may not be:
“How much does our PCF report cost?”
It could be:
“What can our PCF data tell us about our production?”
⚠️ Note: The actual energy-saving or cost-saving opportunities will depend on your equipment, production process, energy sources, operating conditions and data quality. PCF itself does not guarantee savings.
