I have a separate travel fund. A little going in every month before the trip is even booked and before I even know where I’m going.

Smart, strategic money managers have a stash that’s already working for them, so by the time the flight deal drops, they’re not scrambling, they’re just clicking “buy.”

That’s the difference between a trip you can afford and a trip you’re still paying for three months later.

Your passport should collect stamps, not stress.

The secret to actually taking that trip? Start saving before you know where you’re going.

I don’t wait for the destination to decide the budget. I start a “travel fund” first, then let the destination find me. Because when the flight deal drops or your friend says “let’s go to Zanzibar next month,” you don’t want to be the one calculating if your account can survive it. You want to just say yes.

Here’s how I do it:
→ Set a monthly travel amount. Ksh 20,000 a month is Ksh 240,000 after 12 months. That’s a whole trip.
→ Keep it separate from your main account so you’re not tempted to “borrow” from it. I’ve made this mistake a few times, don’t be like me!
→ Let it earn something while it sits there. No reason your travel money should just sleep. Put it into an interest earning account like Africa's Pocket | Financial Planning | Investments

You don’t need the destination to start. You need to set yourself up for success regardless.

Bond yields have dropped a lot this year 📉 Kenya’s 10-year went from around 19% in 2024 to about 11% now, one of the lowest levels in over a decade.

Bonds are still one of the safest places for your money. But “safest” and “only place” aren’t the same thing.

Here’s what we’re doing at Africa’s Pocket: as yields come down, we’re adding on commercial paper and NSE investments to balance out the portfolio, instead of just riding the bond wave down. Our investors don’t have to worry about what’s happening in the news because they know they have a team of experts keeping tabs.
