🚨 RBI’s New Rule on Credit Card Late Payment Charges

On 27 April 2026, RBI announced an important change for credit card users.

Starting 1 April 2027, banks must wait at least 3 days after your payment due date before:
• charging a late payment fee
• reporting your account as overdue to CIBIL

That means if your payment is delayed by just 1–3 days, you won’t face a late fee or immediate impact on your credit score.

📌 Example:
Due date: 5th
Payment made: 8th
✅ No late fee
✅ No CIBIL mark

But if you pay on the 9th (day 4), normal late fees and reporting rules apply.

Another important update:
Late fees will now apply only on the unpaid outstanding amount, not the entire bill amount.

Example:
Bill = ₹10,000
Paid before due date = ₹8,000
Outstanding = ₹2,000

If payment is delayed beyond the grace period, late fees will apply only on ₹2,000.

⚠️ Important:
This 3-day buffer does NOT stop interest charges.
Interest still starts accruing from the day after the due date if any amount remains unpaid.

🗓 Announced: 27 April 2026
🗓 Effective from: 1 April 2027

If you always pay your full bill on time, this rule will never need to protect you. 💳✨
