Imagine you are an exporter and have just received an LC for your export order.

But pause for a moment… do you really know which bank you need to present the complying documents and by what timeline?

How and when will you receive the payment under the LC?

Do you think LC will have all this critical information?

The answer is Yes.

There is UCP 600 Article 6 which talks about — LC Availability, Expiry Date, and Place for Presentation.

In this video, we will understand UCP 600 Article 6 in detail so that there is no confusion about where and when documents must be presented under an LC.

Just imagine you are an intermediary trader and have received a good export order for the supply of goods.

But the challenge is that you do not have a stock of goods, you have little working capital, and you operate on a very narrow margin.

You need to procure the goods from other sources to fulfil the export order.

But how to procure the goods?

So, you seek a means of financing your purchase without using your own resources.

Here comes the role of transferable LC.

Transferable LCs meet the above needs of the trader, as transferable LCs issued in favour of the trader can be used to pay the suppliers from whom the trader obtains goods.

Transferable LC is so critical that an entire article, i.e. Article 38, has been dedicated to it under UCP 600.

In this video, I have discussed UCP 600 article 38 related to transferable LC in detail.

An invoice is a key document for determining what goods have been shipped or what services or performance have been provided, and it declares the value of the goods.

Many presentations under LC fail not because goods were not shipped, but because the invoice did not comply with UCP 600 Article 18.

Issues such as incorrect currency or a mismatch in the goods description between the invoice and the LC may delay or block payment under the LC.

In this video, I have discussed UCP 600 article 18 to know what makes an invoice compliant and what triggers rejection.

LC asks for, among other documents, a bill of lading and insurance documents.

The bill of lading and insurance document have also been presented.

The question is: will you examine the bill of lading first or the insurance document?

My answer would be: First, examine the transport document, i.e., the bill of lading.

WHY? - So that you can know the date of shipment.

Is it important to know the date of shipment for examination of insurance documents? The answer is YES.

WHY? – because UCP 600 sub-article 28 (e) says the date of the insurance document must be no later than the date of shipment, unless it appears from the insurance document that the cover is effective from a date not later than the date of shipment.

In this video, I have discussed UCP 600 article 28 in detail to understand the insurance document and coverage.

LC requires presentation of a bill of lading (B/L) to be marked “clean on board”.

B/L is presented, and you are examining this B/L. You do not find the word “Clean” anywhere on the B/L.

Will you raise a discrepancy because LC stipulates “Clean on-board B/L and presented B/L does not indicate the word “Clean”?

As per UCP 600 Art. 27, the answer is NO, as the word “clean” need not appear on a transport document, even if a LC requires the transport document to be “clean on board”.

In this video, we have discussed UCP 600 article 27 regarding the “Clean Transport Document”.

Transport documents may contain clause that exonerate / absolve the carrier from responsibility.

These clauses are part of normal shipping practice — yet they frequently trigger unnecessary LC discrepancies and may confuse document examiners.

That’s exactly where UCP 600 Article 26 becomes critical, because it tells us such clauses appearing in transport documents are acceptable and not.

Please watch this video for understanding of UCP 600 article.

UCP 600_Article 25_ Courier Receipt, Post Receipt or Certificate of Posting

Are they a Transport Document or NOT?

In this video, we have explained when UCP 600 Article 25 applies and what banks are actually required to examine.

We have clarified that these documents are not documents of title and are non-negotiable, yet must strictly comply with LC terms.

We have also highlighted a key distinction: dispatch of goods is examined under Art 25, whereas dispatch of documents falls under Art 14(f).

This video will help both exporters and bankers handle Article 25 confidently and correctly.

Understanding UCP 600 article 24 is important because it addresses three modes of transport: road, rail, and inland waterway.

UCP 600 article 24 applies to transport documents that provide for only one mode of transport: road, rail, or inland water.

Where more than one mode of transport is involved, it is no longer considered a road, rail, or inland waterway transport document, but a multimodal transport document.

You need to be careful when understanding UCP 600 Article 24, because the criteria and examination parameters differ depending on the mode of transport—road, rail, or inland waterway.

You may watch this video to understand more about UCP 600 Article 24 related to the Road, Rail or Inland Waterway Transport Documents.

If your LC involves air shipment, UCP 600 Article 23 will be crucial, as it governs the air transport document.

What do you think – Is an Air Waybill a negotiable document?

Is the surrender of the Air Waybill required to take delivery of the goods from the carrier?

Unlike a Bill of Lading, an Air Waybill is not a document of title.

That’s why clarity on UCP 600 Art 23 is essential for both exporters preparing documents and bankers examining air transport document under LC.
