It is with a profound sense of loss and deep sorrow that we inform you of the untimely demise of our revered Co-Founding Member, Balbir Punj.
Shri Balbir Punj was an eminent national figure — a two-time Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), a formidable thinker, and a veteran journalist whose voice carried conviction, clarity, and courage. His life was defined by an unwavering commitment to the nation, to informed public discourse, and to the principles of integrity and intellectual honesty.
For the Global Counter Terrorism Council (GCTC), he was far more than a co-founder — he was a cornerstone of our institution. His vision helped shape our foundational philosophy, his guidance steered our course, and his presence gave us strength and direction. In moments of uncertainty, his counsel brought clarity; in moments of ambition, his belief gave us confidence.
Shri Punj possessed a rare ability to combine strategic insight with moral conviction. He understood the complexities of national security, governance, and global affairs with remarkable depth, and consistently championed the need for informed, responsible, and forward-looking dialogue. His contributions were not episodic — they were enduring, and they will continue to define the intellectual and moral fabric of GCTC.
Beyond his towering public persona, he was a man of humility, grace, and quiet strength. He mentored generously, spoke thoughtfully, and inspired effortlessly. Those who had the privilege of interacting with him will remember not just his ideas, but the sincerity and warmth with which he shared them.
His passing is not just a loss to GCTC, but to the larger national and intellectual community he so profoundly influenced. An era of principled thought and steadfast patriotism finds itself diminished today.
In this moment of collective grief, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We share in their sorrow and stand united in honouring a life lived with purpose, dignity, and impact.
As we mourn, we also reaffirm our solemn commitment — to carry forward his vision, to uphold the values he stood for, and to continue building the institution he helped create, with the same conviction and integrity that he embodied.
