Ahead of Budget 2026 (to be presented on 1 Feb 2026), several expert bodies — especially the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) — have suggested introducing an optional joint filing / joint taxation mechanism.
They argue it could:
1) Better reflect household income realities (especially single-income families).
2) Reduce overall tax burden for many married couples.
3) Simplify tax planning and compliance.
