Don’t fall into the trap of thinking “Agricultural income is tax-free, so I don’t need to report it!” ❌
Even though farm income is exempt under Section 10(1) of the Income Tax Act, non-reporting can land you an Income Tax Notice. Here is why filing ITR-2 is crucial if you have farm income above ₹5,000:
🌾 1. Tax Rate Escalation (Partial Integration):
Your agricultural income is added to your non-agricultural income just to decide your tax slab! Skipping this leads to lower tax computation, which the IT Department flags as tax evasion.
🌾 2. Explaining Bank Deposits:
Cash or transfer deposits from crop sales in your bank account need a legitimate tax-return trail. Without ITR reporting, the Income Tax Officer can treat those deposits as “Unexplained Income” under Section 68 and tax them up to 60%+ surcharges!
🌾 3. Asset Creation & Loans:
Want to buy property or get a loan approved? Banks look at reported agricultural income as verified proof of cash flow and repayment capacity.
Who needs to file ITR-2?
Individuals with agricultural income exceeding ₹5,000 along with salary/business/other income.
Note: If agri-income exceeds ₹50 Lakhs, detailed disclosures of landholdings (district, acreage, ownership details) must be declared in Schedule AL!
Save this post for filing season and share it with someone who owns farm land! 📌
