🧳 What I learnt from my small suitcase

I recently came back from a wonderful trip to Romania 🇷🇴. To keep to my holiday budget 💰, I flew low-cost and decided to travel with just a small suitcase — maximum 10kg — and a rucksack. 🎒

Suddenly, every item mattered. What I hadn’t anticipated was how much that 10kg limit would affect me during the holiday too.

👗 Clothes in Romania were really cheap, and I could easily have gone on a spending spree! But every time I saw something I liked, I had to ask myself:

🤔 “Do I want this enough to use some of my limited suitcase space and weight on it?”

After all, buying a bigger suitcase and paying extra to bring it home would rather defeat the purpose of finding a bargain! 😄

💡 And it made me think about how we manage our money.

We have just come through the summer holidays and Chagim, and many of us are thinking it’s time to get our finances back in order.
Perhaps we need to think about our money like my 10kg suitcase.
There is only so much room.

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t buy things we want or enjoy our money. It means learning to ask:
❓ Do I need this?
❤️ Do I want this?
💰 And do I want it enough to make room for it in my budget?
Sometimes, having limits helps us make better choices. 💡

My little suitcase certainly taught me that. 🧳😊

🚨 “Mum, I’m in trouble. I need you to send me money.”

A phone call that every parent and family members does not want to receive. You recognise the voice. It sounds exactly like your son, daughter or grandchild, brother, sister or another family member. ❤️

Except… it may not be them.

🤖 AI can now be used to clone someone’s voice, making a scam call sound frighteningly convincing.

And when you hear the voice of someone you love telling you they are in trouble, your natural reaction is to help.

So what should you do?

🛑 STOP before you send any money.

Ask questions:

📍 Where are you?
❓ What exactly has happened?
👤 Who is with you?
📱 What number are you calling me from?

Then say:

📞 “I’m going to hang up and phone you back.”

Call your family member on the number you normally use. If they do not answer, try another trusted family member who may know where they are.

🔐 Even better – prepare BEFORE this ever happens.

Agree on a private family safe word or phrase that you would use if there were a genuine emergency.

Choose something your family will remember, but something a stranger could not discover by looking through Facebook, Instagram or other social media.

Then, if you ever receive one of these calls, simply ask:

🔑 “What’s our family safe word?”

If they cannot answer correctly:

❌ Do not send money.
❌ Do not give them financial information.
❌ Do not give them personal information.

🤖 AI is an incredible tool. Unfortunately, it can also be used by scammers.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A five-minute conversation with your family today could protect you from making a very expensive decision tomorrow.

Forty-three years ago, on 9th August 1983, I made aliyah.

But my story started much earlier.

At the age of 10, I visited Israel with my older brother on his Bar Mitzvah trip, and we stayed with my grandparents. I don't remember every place we visited, but I do remember one thing with absolute certainty.

💙 I knew that one day I would come and live in Israel.
From that moment on, it became a countdown until I could finally call Israel home. If you had asked me back then what the next four decades would look like, I could never have imagined the journey ahead.

✨ The biggest surprise wasn't Israel. It was discovering who I became because of Israel.

🇮🇱 Israel has taught me resilience when life didn't go according to plan.

🌱 It has taught me flexibility when I needed to adapt.
💪 It has taught me to stay when times were tough rather than walk away.
🌅 Most importantly, it has taught me that no matter what life throws at you, you can always begin again.

Looking back, I realise those lessons haven't just shaped my life—they've shaped the way I work with my clients.

💳 Pocket Money – One Size Doesn't Fit All

Last week, I wrote about the importance of setting clear expectations before giving your children or grandchildren their summer allowance.

This week, I'd like to take it one step further.

I recently read an article about pocket money during the summer holidays. One statistic really stood out: more than half of parents transfer money whenever their child asks, rather than sticking to a regular allowance.

As parents and grandparents, we all want to help. But sometimes, by topping up their allowance, we miss an opportunity to teach one of life's most valuable financial lessons: how to manage money within a budget.

Children of different ages need different financial lessons.

👧 Ages 8–12 – Learning the Basics

At this stage, pocket money isn't about independence—it's about understanding money. Children begin to learn the difference between needs and wants, that money is limited, and that saving for something special takes time. They also discover that they can't buy everything they see.

👦 Ages 13–15 – Learning Responsibility

This is when pocket money becomes a budget. Teenagers start making more of their own spending decisions—whether it's snacks, outings with friends, or entertainment. The goal is to help them plan ahead, prioritise their spending, and make their allowance last.

👩 Ages 16–18 – Preparing for Adult Life

As teenagers become more independent, their allowance should begin to resemble a salary. If they have a summer job, even better. This is the perfect opportunity to teach budgeting, saving, and making informed financial decisions before they enter adulthood.

The amount you give your child is important—but the lesson they learn from receiving it is far more valuable.

By teaching good financial habits while the amounts are still relatively small, we're helping our children develop the confidence and skills they'll need when they begin earning—and managing—their own money.

☀️💰 Summer Holidays and Pocket Money – A Valuable Financial Lesson 💰☀️

The long summer holiday is here! 🌞 While younger children may be heading off to summer camps, many teenagers are at home looking for ways to fill their days.

One question I am often asked is: "How much pocket money should I give my child during the summer?"

The answer depends on your family's financial situation and what you have budgeted for the holidays. However, whatever amount you decide on, make sure your child clearly understands:

✅ What the allowance is intended to cover
✅ What expenses you will continue to pay for separately
✅ What responsibilities come with receiving the allowance

One important lesson I have learned over the years is that money and emotions should not be mixed. If your teenager leaves the kitchen in a mess or turns the living room into a social club, it can be tempting to threaten their allowance. But unless those conditions were agreed in advance, changing the rules halfway through teaches the wrong lesson.

Instead, sit down together at the beginning of the holiday and discuss:

📝 Expectations around household responsibilities
📝 What the allowance covers
📝 Consequences if agreements are not kept
📝 Rewards for positive behaviour

This is not just about pocket money. It is an opportunity to teach your children valuable life skills such as budgeting, planning, responsibility, and negotiation. These lessons will stay with them long after the summer has ended. 🌟
