Celine Tam
Peter Sir
My Heart Will Go On醉倒所有評判,一炮而紅。 How Am I Supposed To Live Without You時取得Golden Buzzer成為第一個摘下黃金按鈕的香港參賽者。
Peter

When a young singer meets an illustrator ( # Poor Academic)
Celine Tam
What kind of spark will form when Celine, who won a Golden Buzzer in America’s Got Talent, meets Peter, an illustrator?
This is a finely drawn story book conveying anti-school bullying messages.
“I want to publish a story book promoting anti-school bullying messages, because I have experienced it before,” said Celine.
The reporter was a bit surprised when Celine stated that, why would a singer want to publish a story book? In response, Celine said that apart from singing, she in fact loves drama and reading.
In her youth, Celine loved to sing. At the age of three, she already knew how to sing with vibrato. And that was when her parents discovered her talent which lead to them training her and letting her participate in various singing competitions to improve her singing skills.
When she was in Primary Five, she joined the ‘Let’s Sing, Kids!”, a children singing show in the Mainland. In that year, she needed to fly to Changsha every month to attend training. It’s not simply a singing show, it aims at training up the children’s team spirit, talking manners to different people and in different situations, eating manners, punctuality and observing the rules in rehearsals, and even character-building.
In joining the show, Celine learned how to get along and cooperate with people of different personalities and backgrounds to make a large-scale show. And she built up solid friendships with the 10-plus participating children.
In 2017 when she was nine, Celine joined America’s Got Talent and captivated the judges with the song “My Heart Will Go On”, getting famous overnight. She then sang “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” and won the Golden Buzzer, becoming the first Hong Kong participant to win it.
Sometime later, a Japanese director invited her to join a talent show in Japan. In the preliminary round, as she was required to sing Japanese and followed the exact beat of the Karaoke, Celine only performed fairly. On seeing the director’s disappointed and nervous face, Celine understood that he was having tremendous pressure. She then worked hard to improve her performance. As a result, she became the only non-Japanese singer in history to win the show!
Being edged out
Yet, when Celine got back to her school, her schoolmates isolated, edged her out, refusing to talk and play with her. This made her feel really bad.
Right at that time, Celine met Peter.
From amateur to a professional illustrator
Peter was born and grew up in Hong Kong. He has loved drawing since he was small. After graduation, he took up designing jobs in an advertising company serving clients like motor companies and cosmetics companies. Yet he still loved to spend his free time in creative drawing. Once in the 1990s, he joined a video-making competition held by IFVA. He tried his very best for some sleepless nights to make a short video “Mr Salmon” and handed it in 5 minutes before the deadline. And he won the championship! In 2001, he won a Silver Award in the Anime Category of the IFVA’s Independent Short Film and Video Competition. His work was then shown in the UK, Germany, Taiwan, Singapore, etc. He was very happy and it was a recognition of his talent. He wanted very much to get into the anime industry to further develop. Yet, he could not get into the track of commercial anime and get a job in it.
Heaven helps those who are determined
In an interview, he came to know Ms Vincci Cheuk, a DJ of Commercial Radio II. Vincci recognised Peter’s talent and asked him to design the characters, draw the comics and make the merchandise for the radio drama “Chi See Gu Bi Family”. More than 40,000 copies of the comic book “Merry-Go-Round” were sold. He then joined a big company “World Cat”, but in 2000, the IT bubble burst. The company needed to change its type of business, forcing Peter to find another job.
Peter designed the popular characters of “Bitter Wing” and “Little Bitter Sister” in the “Chi See Gu Bi Family”. In 2005, Hong Kong Art Centre invited him to make the I-CITY animate movie. In 2006, he founded the “Clapping Hands” creative studio and gallery cooperating with Hong Kong and international brands and organisaions on art and anime. From 2016 to 2018, he was the President of the Hong Kong Society of Illustrators. In recent years, he also takes up the role of a teacher hoping to nurture the interest of different people including children and youth on art. He deeply believes in the teaching philosophy of “do it with your heart and persevere”.
In 2020, when Celine met Peter, she told him that she wanted to publish a picture book on anti-bullying in schools. It was a nice surprise that Peter could accurately express her ideas with beautifully drawn pictures. The two then decided to cooperate and convey anti-bullying messages through the experience of Harper in the book.
All the proceeds of this book, after deducting the production costs, will be donated to CODA Hong Kong to help children in need.
The reporter greatly appreciates that although Celine is still so young, she is so understanding and likes to help the others. Peter can vividly illustrate with finely drawn pictures what Celine wants to tell through Harper’s story. Their cooperation is a perfect match!
Readers of Kongstories who buy this picture book can even get a signed copy (while stock lasts)! Please act fast.
