Started a business or became self-employed during the last tax year?

There’s a date worth putting in your diary now:
❗️5 October 2026

If you need to complete a Self Assessment tax return for the 2025/26 tax year and haven’t registered before, this is normally the deadline to tell HMRC.

That could include people who started working for themselves between 6 April 2025 and 5 April 2026.

October might feel a little way off, but registering early means one less thing to suddenly remember when January rolls around.

Not sure whether you need to complete a tax return?

Ask us. It’s always better to check - 01296 681341

January would really appreciate a favour…

Get your Self Assessment sorted early.

We know.

The Self Assessment deadline isn’t until January.
Which is exactly why now is a much nicer time to deal with it.

No January panic.

No digging through paperwork while simultaneously trying to remember what you bought nine months ago.

No wondering how big the tax bill might be.

Getting your return prepared earlier means you know what you owe sooner and have much more time to plan for it.

And submitting your return early doesn’t mean you have to pay the tax early - the normal payment deadline still applies.

If your records for the year ending 5 April 2026 are ready, send them over.

January-you will be very pleased you did.

Most people don't speak to an accountant when everything's going smoothly.

They get in touch when an HMRC letter has arrived, or when something online has contradicted something else online, or when a deadline is getting closer than they'd like.

Our job at that point is straightforward - explain what's actually going on, set out the options properly, and help you feel confident about where you stand.

No jargon, no surprises!

That receipt in your glovebox could be saving you money…
(if you actually remember it’s there)

The glovebox.
Your handbag.
A pile on the kitchen side.
That one email folder you swear you’ll sort out later.

We know all the favourite homes for business receipts 😂

But keeping your records up to date as you go can save a lot of time later – and makes it much less likely that genuine business expenses get forgotten.

A good habit is to deal with them while you still remember what they were for.

Snap them.
Upload them.
File them.
Done. ✅

Future-you (and your accountant) will thank you.

Your tax return doesn’t have to wait until January.

The January deadline might still feel a long way off, but there are plenty of reasons to get your Self Assessment done sooner.

You’ll know what you owe earlier.

You’ll have more time to budget.

Missing paperwork is easier to find.

Questions can be sorted without the January rush.

And once it’s done, it’s one less thing hanging over you.

You don’t have to pay your tax bill early just because the return is submitted early. The normal payment deadline still applies.

If your records for the year ending 5 April 2026 are ready, send them over and let’s get it ticked off.

Ever looked at your accounts, seen a healthy profit and thought…

Where is it then?! 👀

You’re definitely not the first business owner to ask.

Profit and cash in the bank aren’t the same thing.

Your money could be tied up in unpaid invoices, stock, equipment, loan repayments, tax payments or money you’ve already taken from the business.

Which is exactly why looking at your bank balance alone doesn’t always tell you how well your business is doing.

Good accounts help you see the bigger picture - what you’re earning, what you’re spending and where the money is actually going.

Much more useful than simply hoping there’s enough left at the end of the month!

One of the best parts of being an accountant is watching businesses grow over the years and knowing we've been alongside them for it.

The first set of accounts, the first VAT registration, the first employee, the move into bigger premises - we've seen plenty of those moments with our clients.

Ten years, twenty years, sometimes longer. We never take that trust for granted.

Have all your company directors verified their identity?

Identity verification is now part of the Companies House process for directors and people with significant control.

Existing directors will need to provide their personal code when the company files the relevant confirmation statement during the transition period.

That means it’s important not to leave it until the filing deadline.

Make sure you have:
✓ Verified your identity
✓ Received your personal code
✓ Kept the code somewhere safe
✓ Shared it with whoever handles the company filings, where needed

How is 2026 looking for your business so far?

We’re already more than halfway through the year, so now is a good time to stop and take a proper look at how things are going.
Are sales where you expected them to be?

Have your costs gone up?

Is cash flow feeling comfortable, or a little tighter than you’d like?

Do your prices still work for your business?

Your accounts shouldn’t just tell you what happened last year. Keeping your figures up to date can help you make better decisions now, while there’s still time to do something about them.

Sometimes a quick review is all it takes to spot where things are going well and where a little attention might be needed.

When did you last properly look at your numbers?
