If you've recently set up a limited company, you've taken on something that often doesn't get explained well... directors' duties.

You're now legally responsible for filing accounts and confirmation statements on time, keeping proper records, declaring any conflicts of interest, and acting in the company's best interests (not just your own). Companies House and HMRC don't care whether you knew the rules. The penalties would arrive either way.

It sounds a little heavy when you write it down. In practice, most of it is straightforward as long as you've got the right support around you and you're not trying to work it all out at midnight on the day before a deadline.

If you're not sure what you're meant to be doing in your first year as a director, that's a question worth asking, and there's no judgement in asking.

Making Tax Digital is starting to become very real for a lot of business owners and landlords.

And understandably, we’re getting quite a few conversations starting with:
“What actually is it?” 😅

From April 2026, some self-employed individuals and landlords earning over £50,000 will need to keep digital records and submit updates to HMRC every quarter.

Then from April 2027, it expands further.

If you’re wondering what you should be doing now, here’s a good place to start:

✔ Make sure your bookkeeping is up to date
✔ Stop relying on piles of receipts and spreadsheets alone
✔ Check whether your software is MTD-compatible
✔ Keep business income and expenses organised
✔ Speak to your accountant before the deadlines arrive

A few small changes now can make things feel much easier later on.

It doesn't matter to us whether someone is turning over £20,000 or £20 million - the questions deserve the same care, the same patience, and the same honest answer. Nobody should feel too small to ask.

Do you feel able to ask your accountant questions?

What does it actually cost to hire someone on £30,000?

The salary is the obvious bit... It's also nowhere near the full picture.
On top of the £30,000 you'll typically be looking at:

▪️Employer's National Insurance - currently 15% above the secondary threshold

▪️Pension contributions -3% minimum under auto-enrolment

▪️The apprenticeship levy if your payroll bill is above £3 million

▪️The cost of paid holiday, which is usually around 12% of salary once you account for 28 days off including bank holidays

By the time you've added employer's liability insurance, equipment, recruitment costs and the hours someone spends managing the new person... a £30,000 salary often costs closer to £38,000-£40,000 a year.

Then there's everything most people forget to budget. To name a few... employer's liability insurance, equipment and software, recruitment fees. Then all the indirect costs of managing, training and supporting the new person.

Also... the benefits that have become standard, things like an Employee Assistance Programme, private medical cover, life assurance, or death in service (if you offer some of these).

So if you're thinking of hiring someone its essential to plan and budget properly before you do.

A lot of businesses don’t realise the VAT threshold is based on a rolling 12 months - not the tax year.

Which means it can creep up much faster than people expect.

A few busy months, a larger project, or a strong run of work can suddenly push things much closer to the threshold than you realised.

And because it doesn’t “reset” in April, many business owners only spot it once they’ve already crossed it.

If your business has grown recently, now’s a good time to check where things actually stand.

Having an accountant is a necessity for business owners. They're there to support with compliance, financial reporting and helping you understand the numbers behind your business.

But without the right accountant it can feel very overwhelming... unanswered questions, unclear advice that sends you down a Google rabbit hole (leaving you more confused than when you started), and the nagging worry that things aren't being done properly.

So when clients say things like "for the first time since owning my business, the worries have gone", it makes us so happy. That's the impact we want to have, and looking after our clients properly is what matters most to us.

The common thinking of "I’ll sort it later.”

And then later becomes...
• piles of receipts
• unanswered emails
• bookkeeping that’s months behind
• and a tax bill you weren’t expecting

It's easy to become disorganised when you’re so busy.

But staying on top of things little and often makes a huge difference.

If things have started to pile up a bit, the BAS team are here to help.

Being busy and being profitable are not always the same thing.

A business can have plenty of work coming in and still feel financially stressful behind the scenes.

Usually because once materials, wages, VAT and tax all start coming out, there’s far less left than people expected.

That’s why understanding the numbers properly matters.

Not just at year end, but throughout the year.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to start.
