We have some exciting news!

NRB are merging with leading North West accountancy firm Cowgills further strengthening its footprint in the North West. This move aligns with Cowgills ambitious growth strategy, which aims for a 25% expansion over the next 12 months.

The acquisition provides Cowgills with a Wigan office, adding to its existing locations in Bolton, Manchester, and Liverpool, and increasing its team from 220 to 250 professionals.

Founded in 1948 by Norman Richard Barton, NRB has been a cornerstone of the Wigan business community for over 75 years, offering expert accounting, taxation, and business advisory services. With a strong reputation and a forward-thinking approach, NRB has developed particular expertise in digital technology solutions to support its clients.

Cowgills joined the Sumer Group in early 2024, gaining the backing to execute an ambitious acquisition strategy, focusing on firms that align with its entrepreneurial ethos and dynamic culture.

Paul Stringer, Managing Partner at Cowgills, commented:

"We’ve been highly selective in choosing firms that share our values and culture—ones that will truly benefit and enhance our business. The team at NRB embodies everything we stand for, and their expertise will be a tremendous asset strengthening our presence in Wigan and Lancashire. Their knowledge in digital technology also presents exciting new opportunities for our clients and our firm.”

Catherine Rogers, NRB, added:

"Having been established in Wigan for over 75 years, our priority was ensuring any merger was with a firm that our team and clients could trust completely. We have known the team at Cowgills for many years and are thrilled to be joining forces with a firm that shares our values and commitment to exceptional client service. This partnership marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, enabling us to continue delivering leading advice while unlocking new opportunities for our clients.”

Changes to National Insurance Contributions Effective 6 April 2025 🚨

The government has announced significant changes to National Insurance Contributions (NICs) that will impact employers from April 2025.

🔹 Employer NIC Rate Increase – Rising from 13.8% to 15%, meaning employers will pay more per employee.

🔹 Lower Secondary Threshold – Dropping from £9,100 to £5,000, meaning NICs will apply to more of your employees' salaries.

🔹 Higher Employment Allowance – Increasing from £5,000 to £10,500, with the £100,000 eligibility threshold removed – benefiting more businesses.

We understand that navigating these changes can be challenging. Our team here at NRB is here to provide support and guidance tailored to your specific circumstances.

Inflation Drops - What Does It Mean for Your Business? 📊

The Bank of England has officially reduced interest rates from 4.75% to 4.5%—their lowest level in 18 months and the third cut since August 2024. While this brings potential relief for borrowers, the Bank has signalled a cautious approach to further reductions.

🔷 Lower Borrowing Costs – Good news for businesses and homeowners with loans or mortgages.

🔷 Mixed Outlook – Despite falling inflation, rising payroll costs in April could push prices up, squeezing profit margins.

🔷 Plan Ahead – Wage increases, and higher National Insurance contributions are on the horizon. Now’s the time to reassess your cash flow, pricing strategies, and operational efficiency.
