MTD is just around the corner, I'm seeing on forums people questioning if MTD will push Sole Traders into being LTD..

Being ltd or sole trader really depends on how you structure a limited company, what your goals for future are etc, how many directors etc etc there are so many factors its not a one size fits all. MTD isn't one of the factors though.

Don't let MTD scare you.... its quarterly accounts instead of yearly, its not as bad as you think and here at CASA we are happy to help.

πŸ“’ ITSA MTD – Are You Ready? πŸ“’

3 weeks until MTD-Day!!!

From April 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) will change how self-employed individuals and landlords report their income to HM Revenue & Customs.

βœ… Quarterly digital updates
βœ… End-of-year submission
βœ… Digital records required

If you earn over Β£50,000, this will apply to you first – with more taxpayers joining from 2027.

The good news? With the right software and support, MTD doesn’t have to be stressful. It can actually give you better visibility of your finances throughout the year πŸ“Š

If you’re unsure how ITSA MTD affects you or want help getting prepared, feel free to message us today πŸ’¬

An estimated 1 million people were late in filling there self-assessment!!

To avoid fines getting out of control file your return ASAP!!

If you need help..... you know where we are πŸ™ƒπŸ˜‰

Failing to submit your tax return triggers a tiered penalty system that increases significantly over time:

* Initial Fine: An automatic Β£100 fixed penalty is applied immediately after the deadline.

* 3 Months Late (from May 1): Daily penalties of Β£10 per day begin, up to a maximum of Β£900.

* 6 Months Late: A further penalty of Β£300 or 5% of the tax due (whichever is greater) is added.

* 12 Months Late: Another Β£300 or 5% of the tax due is applied.

The top 10 most bizarre excuses and questionable expenses claims for items, in reverse order, are:

1 - caravan rental for the Easter weekend

2 - I was up a mountain in Wales, and couldn’t find a post box or get an internet signal πŸŒ„

3 - my dog ate the post … again πŸ•

4 - claiming £4.50 for sausage and chips meal expenses for 250 days 🌭

5 - my hamster ate my post 🍴

6 - I’ve been cruising round the world in my yacht, and only picking up post when I’m on dry land πŸš£β€β™€οΈπŸš£

7 - a music subscription so I can listen to music while I work 🎼🎧

8 - pet food for a Shih Tzu β€˜guard dog’ πŸ•

9 - a DJ was too busy with a party lifestyle – spinning the deck….in a bowls club 🎧

10 - my mother-in-law is a witch and put a curse on me πŸ§™β€β™€οΈ

All the excuses and expenses listed above were unsuccessful. πŸ€£πŸ˜†

Making Tax Digital

Hi all. Just thought you might like some initial guidance.

Sole Traders - Landlords or combined income of the two. πŸ“‡πŸ‘

Firstly It is strongly advised to get a business bank account and use it for business only. Not only will this help with MTD it helps with an audit with HMRC too. Avoid using the business account for any personal use. πŸ’»πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»πŸ‘©β€πŸ’»

MTD will run 4 quarters with one final self-assessment being the same as you do now. πŸ“…

April - June
July - Sept
Oct - Dec
Jan - Mar

You must use HMRC complaint software or add ons to submit and to do the bookkeeping in. πŸ’ΆπŸͺ™πŸ’΅πŸͺ™πŸ’·πŸͺ™

Income (not profit) over Β£50k you must start reporting via MTD in April 26. Your first submission to HMRC will be due 7th August 2026

It's being brought in to align tax records. HMRC believes this will help stop errors in reporting. Tax will still be paid January & July as normal.πŸ“ˆ

Really hope this helps a little.

Take care 😊

Do you earn over Β£1000 a year (turnover not profit) on a side hustle - check if you need to file a self-assessment tax return?

A side hustle is any income earned away from an employed role, Etsy, Ebay, Consulting etc etc.

Please be aware that Ebay, Etsy etc are now advising HMRC of their sellers so they will know you exist.

If we can help, you know where to find us ☺️

Making Tax Digital for Sole Traders and Landlords is getting very close. April 2026!! πŸ βŒ›οΈπŸ’·

If you have a combined income of Β£50k through these two income streams, (or either one) then you need to start thinking about MTD!! πŸ—“πŸ’»

Do not get caught out between income and profit, if your income is over Β£50k and declared on your self-assessment this affects you!!

In 2027 the income will be at a Β£30k level so will affect more and more sole traders and landlords. πŸ“ˆπŸ“‰
