Love having a bit of LBC on in the background and something on Paul Brand’s show today really caught my attention.

The discussion was around young people and NEETs and it got me thinking about my own start.

Nearly 20 years ago, Chris Churchill at West Dorset District Council took a chance on me. I’ll always be grateful for that and for the managers and mentors since who have passed on their wisdom along the way.

If you’re struggling to get your first foot on the ladder, why not consider working for yourself?

Start small. Wash cars, cut grass, sell something, offer a service.

You’ll learn sales, customer service, problem solving, money management, communication and resilience. Sometimes the School of Hard Knocks is the best teacher.

And with those skills under your belt, you suddenly become a much stronger hire.

We’re always here to help, so if you are considering it, get in touch.

Great catching up with Shawn from Dorset Kitchen & Joinery Solutions today.

With Shawn’s permission, I wanted to give his business a little Friday shout out.

It’s always good to spend time with local business owners, hear more about what they’re building and where we can, help support and promote the brilliant businesses we work alongside.

Shawn carries out kitchen fitting, carpentry and joinery work across the local area, so if you’re looking for someone to help with an upcoming project, he’s definitely worth speaking to.

You can check out his work at:
www.dorsetkitchenandjoinery.com

Or find Dorset Kitchen & Joinery Solutions Ltd on Facebook.

Supporting local businesses costs nothing but it can make a huge difference.

Have a great Friday everyone! 🙌

TAX TIP TUESDAY

Business mileage just got a little more valuable!

From 6 April 2026, HMRC has increased the approved mileage rate for cars and vans from 45p to 55p per business mile for the first 10,000 miles.

That’s a 22% increase! 📈

After 10,000 business miles, the rate remains at 25p per mile.

👥 Taking a colleague with you?

You can also pay an additional 5p per business mile, per passenger, where you’re carrying a fellow employee who is also travelling for business.

⚠️ One thing to watch…

If you’re self-employed and choose to use HMRC’s simplified mileage rates for a vehicle, you cannot also claim capital allowances on that same vehicle.

As always, keep a good record of your business mileage because those miles can soon add up!

PS if only I had kept my first car, this would be me enjoying her today!

A huge thank you to Lynne Henderson for putting on another fantastic networking event at Rivo Hub in Wareham.

It was great to meet some brilliant local business owners, make a few new connections and catch up with some familiar faces too.

A special mention to Liz from The Friendly Food Club. It was really inspiring to hear more about the work they do, helping people make better food choices and providing practical support to those who need it most.

A brilliant event, a lovely group of people, and one I’d definitely recommend.

If you haven’t been before, make sure you get along to the next one! 🙌

Less than 4 days to go before these three beauties take on the gruelling challenge of circumnavigating the Isle of Wight on foot!

Wishing the lads the very best of luck for what is going to be one seriously tough challenge. I’ll be there with them every step of the way in spirit… although physically, I’ll be at home with my feet firmly up. 😊

An incredible challenge for an incredible cause, raising money and awareness for the British Heart Foundation. ❤️

Best of luck lads, go smash it!

💡 Tax Tip Tuesday – “Can I put it through the business?”

It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often:

“Can I put it through my business?”

And, unfortunately, the answer is often… no.

Having just returned from a week in the beautiful Andalusian mountains, a tax thought crossed my mind as they often do!

What about foreign travel? Can that be claimed?

The answer is the accountant’s favourite:

“It depends…”

Where travel is undertaken wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the business, the costs can be an allowable business expense.

So, for example, travelling abroad specifically for a conference, client meeting, training course or other genuine business purpose can qualify.

My trip?

Wife ✅
Kids ✅
Sunshine ✅
Seven days without doing a single bit of work ✅

Business trip? Definitely not. 😂

So unfortunately, that’s one receipt that will be staying well away from the company accounts!

The key point is that where you go isn’t necessarily what matters, why you went there is.

This week’s goes to Cowleaze Cut Flowers 💐🌸

We recently picked up a beautiful little bunch from this brilliant cottage industry florist, where the flowers are lovingly grown, picked and put together into gorgeous bouquets.

There’s something really special about buying local. Not only do we get beautiful flowers to brighten up our home but we also get to support someone who is building something of their own and chasing their dreams one bouquet at a time. 🌷

That’s exactly what is all about… spending a little locally, supporting independent businesses and celebrating the brilliant people behind them.

Thank you, Cowleaze Cut Flowers the flowers look fantastic! 🌼

Back to BNI Regency this morning after a week away in the Andalusian mountains, surrounded by almond groves and an almost lunar landscape!

This week I had the pleasure of seeing first hand just how powerful AI can be for businesses, automating everyday tasks, improving efficiency and ultimately freeing up more time to focus on the things that really matter.

A huge thank you to Damian at Digital Doctor for such an engaging and interactive presentation. And, of course, a special mention for Coops the dog, who did a fantastic job of demonstrating AI by providing the answers!

As always, thank you to Coastland College - Kingston Maurward for hosting us in such a brilliant setting.

Lovely people, in a great location, doing fantastic business together, exactly what BNI is all about.
