Transition to Online-Only System for Company Strike Off Objections

Starting from December 1, 2026, directors will need to adapt to a new process for submitting objections to limited company strike offs, as Companies House will transition to an online-only submission system. This change means that objections will no longer be accepted via email. Instead, directors will be required to use the "Make an objection online" service available on the company register site, accessible through Gov.uk One Login and existing Government Gateway accounts.

This move aims to streamline the process, providing a more consistent and efficient method for handling objections. The transition to a solely web-based system reflects a broader trend towards digitalization in government services, which is intended to enhance user experience and ensure more reliable management of company records.

Directors should prepare for this change by familiarizing themselves with the online platform to ensure a smooth transition.

65% of tax penalties overturned on appeal

The recent surge in appeals against penalties by taxpayers has reached a six-year high, largely attributed to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) adopting a more automated approach to imposing fines.

This "blunt approach" involves the use of computer-generated penalties that aim to streamline the process and ensure compliance. However, critics argue that this method lacks the nuance required to accurately assess individual circumstances, potentially leading to unjust fines.

The increase in appeals reflects growing taxpayer frustration and highlights the need for a more balanced and empathetic approach. Balancing efficiency with fairness is crucial to maintaining public trust in the tax system, and HMRC may need to reassess its strategies to ensure that automation does not compromise justice and accuracy.

Companies House Accelerates Transition to Gov.UK One Login System

Migration to One Login to access company register ramps up as Companies House urges directors to create new accounts as Government Gateway access replaced

The transition to Gov.UK One Login as the primary sign-in method for Companies House marks a significant step in modernizing digital access to government services.

By shifting away from the Government Gateway system, the initiative aims to streamline and unify the user experience across various government departments. The updated landing page will prominently feature the Gov.UK One Login, simplifying the process for users accessing essential services, such as the "find and update company information" service.

This service is crucial for company directors who need to file and amend records on the company register. The accelerated migration reflects a broader ambition to enhance accessibility and security in digital interactions with government services, ultimately benefiting both individuals and businesses by providing a more coherent and efficient system.

£24.2bn Surge in Capital Gains Tax Reflects 89% Increase

The surge in capital gains tax (CGT) receipts to £24.2 billion in the 2024-25 fiscal year marks a significant milestone, driven by an 89% increase from the previous year. This dramatic rise is attributed to asset owners rushing to sell businesses and properties in anticipation of potential tax rate hikes by former chancellor Rachel Reeves in the 2024 Budget.

The year-on-year increase of £11.4 billion surpasses the total CGT collected in any fiscal year between 1987-88 and 2019-20, underscoring the scale of the change. This record-breaking figure surpasses the previous high of £17 billion set in 2021-22, when asset sales surged post-pandemic.

Alongside the rise in receipts, the number of CGT taxpayers also hit a record high, with 584,000 individuals, up 45% from the previous year. This significant uptick highlights the broader impact of policy anticipation and economic conditions on taxpayer behavior and government revenue.

Summer VAT cut ends on 1 September

The Great British Summer Savings initiative has been a boon for families across the UK, with the government reporting substantial savings thanks to the VAT reduction from 20% to 5% on children’s meals in restaurants and admission to attractions such as theatres and soft play areas.

Additionally, the scheme provided free bus fares for children aged five to fifteen in England. This program, introduced by former Chancellor Rachel Reeves, aimed to alleviate the financial strain on families during the summer holidays amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Businesses like Haven, a holiday park operator, have also participated, resulting in £4 million in savings for their visitors. However, while families have reaped the benefits, businesses face challenges due to the complexities surrounding VAT exemptions and the potential for administrative pitfalls. As the program concludes on Tuesday, businesses and families alike reflect on the positive impact and navigate the nuances of VAT regulations.

MTD to cost £380m for £20k earners

The recent announcement by HMRC highlights a significant shift for sole traders and landlords with an income threshold of £20,000, as they will be required to comply with Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax starting April 2028.

This change mandates the digital recording of income and expenditure, alongside the submission of quarterly summaries and an annual return. While the initiative aims to streamline tax processes and improve accuracy, HMRC has cautioned that those affected may face substantial transitional and ongoing costs.

This could include expenses related to new software, training, or professional assistance to navigate the digital tax landscape. As such, it is crucial for impacted individuals to plan ahead, explore available resources and support, and potentially seek financial advice to ensure a smooth transition to the digital tax system.

‘In doing so they may incur significant transitional and continuing costs,’ a policy paper from HMRC stated.

‘Overall, HMRC estimates a transitional cost of £380m, and a net increase in the continuing costs of tax compliance of £101m for those businesses with income between £20,000 and £30,000,’

King Charles 10p coins enter circulation

King Charles already features on £5, £10, £20 and £50 banknotes, running alongside the notes featuring the portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II and all remain legal and in active circulation.

Millions of 10p coins featuring King Charles III were released with highly endangered Capercaillie bird appearing on the tails side. With the new coins entering circulation, they draw attention to the critically endangered Capercaillie, a species found exclusively in the Scottish Highlands. The Royal Mint's initiative hopes to spark a broader conversation about conservation, highlighting the pressing need to protect this unique bird from extinction.

As these coins become a part of everyday transactions, they also represent King Charles III's first appearance on a 10p coin, emphasizing his ongoing commitment to environmental causes.
