The thing about jump-starting that van at LAMMA, apart from the rain, the awkwardness, and the eventual success, is this:

💡 It only worked because someone (thankfully!) had planned ahead.

A spare battery. A set of jump leads.
Nothing fancy, but enough to solve a problem when it showed up.

And that got me thinking about how many businesses, especially dealerships, are running day-to-day without those kinds of backups.

👉 No system for spotting slow-moving stock early
👉 No plan for chasing debtors consistently
👉 No monthly review that catches WIP before it becomes a backlog
👉 No clarity in reporting, just reacting when something feels off

They wait until something doesn’t start…
…and only then scramble to fix it.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Following on from my little “jump leads in the rain” moment at LAMMA…

It got me thinking, how often in business do we see someone struggling, and just keep our heads down?

It’s not usually out of malice.
We’re all busy. Focused. Trying to get through our own to-do list.
But sometimes, just like in that holding area, helping someone out doesn’t take as much as we think.

💡 Maybe it’s answering that “silly” question a client was too afraid to ask.
💡 Or spotting a gap in someone’s report and giving them a nudge.
💡 Or saying, “Need a hand with that?” even when it’s not your job.

In my world, helping a dealership get clarity on their numbers or confidence in their decisions might not always be “urgent” but it’s often the exact thing that helps them move forward.

Because just like that van, sometimes people are stuck, not because they don’t want to move, but because they’re missing the spark to get going.

👉 That’s why the little things matter.
The follow-up call. The check-in. The offer to explain something again.
It might seem small to you but it could be a turning point for them.

So here’s to doing the right thing, even when it’s raining.
And to building businesses where looking out for others is part of how we work not just a nice bonus.

🚐 “Do you have any jump leads?”

That’s how a simple request at the end of LAMMA 2026 turned into one of the most unexpected and satisfying moments of the day.

After the show ended, I left the hall to get the van from the holding area. While waiting (in the rain, naturally), a young guy tapped on my window, his van wouldn’t start. He was asking around for help, but most people just stayed put, warm and dry in their own vehicles.

I wasn’t sure I could help either… until I remembered that my partner had stashed a spare battery in the van, just in case. And where there’s a spare battery, there had to be jump leads, right?

Sure enough, there they were.

Neither of us had jump-started a vehicle before, but we figured it out. In the rain. With a bit of common sense. And the kind encouragement of one person (who then left the moment the line moved… but hey, credit where credit is due).

We got his van started.
I missed our initial slot back to the hall by a few minutes.
And I got a bit soaked.
But here’s the thing: it cost me nothing.

In fact, we packed up efficiently, hit no traffic on the way out, and had a smooth run back to Somerset. The time I "lost" helping someone else?

I think I gained it back and then some.

💡 So what’s the business lesson in all this?

👉 Sometimes we hesitate to help because we think we don’t have time.
👉 Or we assume we don’t have the right tools or knowledge.
👉 Or we tell ourselves someone else will step in.

But leadership, in business or in life, is often about showing up, getting involved, and doing what you can with what you’ve got.

Helping others doesn’t always cost you time.
In fact, it can make your own path smoother.
Not to mention, it just feels good to be useful.

So next time you’ve got a chance to lend a hand (or a set of jump leads)… take it.
