A useful five-minute exercise if you are in your 50s and thinking about retirement.๐Ÿค”

Write down what a genuinely good day looks like for you. Not a perfect day. Just a good one.
Where are you?
What are you doing?
Who are you with?
What gives it its shape?

Then ask yourself: how much of that is possible right now, and how much depends on retiring?

Most people find the gap is smaller than they expected, and the planning question gets much clearer as a result.๐Ÿ˜€

Monday morning. Devon. Coffee. Fields out of the window.

Same work, different view. And that's entirely the point.

Hazel and I build a few weeks like this into every year. A cottage somewhere in the UK, Bruno in the back of the car, laptops packed alongside everything else. We can work from anywhere with a signal, so why wouldn't we?

I'm often asked what I mean when I talk about designing the next chapter rather than just waiting for it. This is part of my answer.
It doesn't have to be dramatic. It doesn't have to mean giving everything up. It just means being deliberate about how you want your days to look, and then building toward that, one decision at a time.

That's what I help people do.

Have a good week, wherever you're working from.

If you retired tomorrow, what would you do on Monday morning? ๐Ÿค”

Not the holiday. Not the big plans. Just Monday morning.

Drop your answer in the comments. I am genuinely curious, and it is one of the most revealing questions I know.

let's see your Mondays๐Ÿ‘‡

Most people in their 50s have spent decades with one question answered for them.

What does a good day look like? ๐Ÿ’ญ

Work answers it without you having to think. Structure. Identity. Social connection. A reason to get up.

Which is exactly why thinking about it before you get there matters so much.
The financial plan is what makes retirement possible.
The life plan is what makes it worthwhile.

Have you thought about what your days will actually look like?

I have been deep in final preparations for our summer fete this week. I am part of a small community group called Waterlooville Community Events, and on 28th June we are expecting around 5,000 people through the gates.

What strikes me every time is why people get involved. Not for payment, but for purpose. The feeling of being part of something that matters.

It is not a retirement conversation. But it is absolutely a retirement lesson.

What gives your days their shape and meaning right now? And what will?

"Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence." - Aristotle

That quote lands differently when you are in your 50s and starting to think seriously about what comes next.

Sunday's note is about something I hear a lot:
"I know I probably could retire, I'm just not sure I believe it."

There's often a gap between what's financially possible and what feels safe.

That's what I'm writing about this week.
If you'd like it in your inbox, check the link in my bio.

If you could do one trip in the next two years, no excuses, what would it be?

Drop it in the comments. I'm curious.

And if you're not sure what it would actually take to make it happen, that's a good conversation to have.

A simple exercise worth five minutes of your time.

Write down your top 5 trips. The big ones.

The ones that have been on the list for years. That is five years of real planning if you do them one by one.

Now price them up, honestly.
What would each one actually cost?
When would you go?
What needs to be in place first?

This exercise alone changes "one day" into something with a shape.

Happy to help if you want to think it through.

05/06/2026

52% of adults over 50 rank travel as their number one priority for retirement.

More than half. And yet most people I speak to have a list of trips that keeps getting pushed to "one day."

The window for the more demanding experiences is narrower than most people plan for.

Worth thinking about ๐Ÿ’ญ
