Are we saving enough for retirement?
This is one of the most common questions I am asked. The answer, of course, is – it all depends!
The level of your pension savings and investments necessary to support your lifestyle in retirement will depend on many things:
• The age at which you would like to retire
• How much time you have before you reach retirement age
• The kind of lifestyle you would ideally want in retirement
• Your current financial circumstances, requirements, and capacity to save
• Your attitude towards risk.
The first step is to sit down and start the process of planning for retirement. Whilst working out your income and expenditure is an obvious place to start, planning for retirement is not just about the numbers. Thinking about what you want to do with your money before and after retirement is equally, if not more important. This may be a bucket-list goal, or to make sure your children have sufficient funds to achieve their lifetime goals.
An independent adviser, like me, can help you to work out a plan and to check whether you are on track to achieve all that you would like to achieve. The earlier you identify a possible shortfall in your pension savings the better.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you feel I can be of assistance. I will do my best to give you the assurance you are looking for, or alternatively help you map out a plan to address any concerns that you might have. Knowing that you have actually done something to start the process rolling will give you some comfort and give me an opportunity to demonstrate the value of financial planning.
