As a business we have been working for our clients for a couple of years to help turn them into better businesses. Toughen them up for attacks from clients, agencies and from HMRC.

Along the way, we looked at what was available on the market and basically.....it’s IR35 Insurance, contract review or artificial ‘schemes’. About a fifth of the story, at best.

In my experience, there’s power in planning, and that, my friends, takes time. There’s no point in putting a sticking plaster on an amputation. So start today, there will never be a better time.

All that being said, the tax man’s deadline is 5th April 2020, so by now contractors just like you should be starting to get their ducks in a row.

1. Find a Substitute
When you receive a profile from us, take the time to read through their details. We know there’s a temptation to skim read things, especially online, and especially if you have lots of profiles to read through, but you never know what might spark your interest. Remember that these profiles have been chosen for their similarity to your skills and experience, your first impressions may be wrong.

2. Appoint a Substitute
Any candidate worth a look will have taken the time to fill out their profile carefully, but at the same time don’t expect to find someone who matches every element of what you do. As long as there’s something there that make you think ‘I want to know more about this profile’, then you’re on the right track. That’s where the next step of our process comes in – you can send your chosen profile(es) their first round of questions, and start to see if they are right for this role.

3. Management Systems
Most businesses have certain business procedures. It might be that you need someone who has a specific certification or can speak another langue. It may be a set up operating procedures that need to be adhered to . This is not the same as drawing up a shopping list and applying it to the successful candidate – it is just the acceptance that time will have to be taken to ensure the candidate is comfortable with the role and that processes are put in place to “activate” the candidate when you are unavailable. You choose these when you set up your role(s), but can edit them at any time. At this stage, you should send them to your matching candidates to ensure they are happy and comfortable with the role(s).
