What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)? Our Senior Accountant Dan explains in this video.

What we’d recommend you do now:

Check whether you’re already required to be in MTD:

If your self-employment or property income (or combined income from both) is over £50,000, this applies to you now.

Sign up on https://GOV.UK if you haven’t already:

Don’t wait for HMRC’s letter. Get your software sorted, you’ll need HMRC-recognised software to submit quarterly updates; we can help you choose one that fits your business and, if you’d like, handle the submissions for you.

Send your first quarterly update if it’s outstanding:

The deadline for the first quarter has already passed (7 August), but there’s no penalty for filing it late this year.

If your income is between £30,000–£50,000, start planning now:
You’ll be brought into MTD from April 2027, and it’s easier to get ahead of it than scramble later.

Need help? Get in touch. Whether you need help registering, choosing software, or want us to manage your quarterly submissions for you, we're here to take the hassle out of MTD.

We often speak with clients who want to reduce their inheritance tax exposure but feel stuck because most of their assets are tied up in their home.

The good news? There are options that don't require you to downsize or move out.
Here's what many people don't realise: simply "gifting" your home to your children while continuing to live in it won't work for IHT purposes. The taxman sees through that one! But there are legitimate strategies that can help:

🔑 Become a tenant – Gift the property and pay your children market-rate rent
🔑 Share ownership – Transfer a portion to children who live with you as tenants in common

Both approaches can start the seven-year exemption clock ticking, potentially saving your family significant sums in inheritance tax.

The key is understanding the anti-avoidance rules and structuring things properly from the start. Get it wrong, and you could find the planning doesn't work when it matters most.

Nearly half a million sole traders and landlords have already sent their first Making Tax Digital (MTD) update. Have you?*

If you're a sole trader or landlord earning over £50,000, MTD for Income Tax isn't optional anymore, it's how you report to HMRC now.

The good news? There's no penalty for filing late this year (but that won't last).

The part worth knowing: from September, HMRC starts actively signing people up who haven't done it themselves - and once that happens, you lose control over the process and the timing.

Our advice? Sign up now, on your own terms, and get your software sorted before HMRC gets in touch first.

We've broken down exactly what's changed, what's coming, and what to do next 👇

How often do you properly review your business performance?

If you're only looking at the numbers once a year when your accounts are done, you're missing key opportunities to course-correct and grow.

Here's Paul again, explaining why quarterly or half-yearly business reviews are so important:

a) Check you're on track with sales

Are you hitting your revenue targets? If not, you'll spot it early enough to do something about it.

b) Understand your true profitability

Revenue looks great on paper, but profit tells the real story. Regular reviews help you see where margins are being squeezed and which parts of your business are actually making you money.

c) Stay on top of cashflow

You can be profitable on paper and still run into cash problems. Reviewing your cashflow regularly means you can anticipate tight periods, plan for larger expenses, and avoid those sleepless nights worrying about payroll.

d) Make informed decisions

Want to hire someone? Invest in new equipment? Expand into a new market? Regular financial reviews give you the confidence to make these decisions based on real data, not guesswork.

When did you last review your numbers? If it's been a while, let's schedule a business review and make sure you're on track for where you want to be.

3 good reasons why you need an accountant

Mike tells it like it is - we call it a Mike Drop :-)

1) You'll actually save money

Yes, accountants cost money, but they save you more. From identifying tax reliefs you didn't know existed to spotting inefficiencies in your spending, the savings typically outweigh the fees. Not to mention the costly mistakes you'll avoid.

2) You'll get your time back

How many hours do you spend each month on bookkeeping, invoices, VAT returns, and payroll? Now imagine redirecting that time into winning new clients or developing your business. That's the real cost of DIY accounting.

3) You'll make better decisions

Without clear financial insight, you're essentially flying blind. An accountant gives you the numbers you need - presented in a way you can actually use - so you can make informed decisions about pricing, hiring, investing, and growth.

Let's talk about how we can help you get clear on your numbers and focused on growing your business.

We're excited to announce that we have a new apprentice, his name is Bill - he's not long out of school and full of ambition.

In September, he's starting an AAT accounting course to become and accountant.

His plan is to one day become a Chartered Accountant (so, he's in the right place).

Best of luck Bill⭐

If things slow down for you over August, it's the perfect opportunity to take a step back and review a few things.

Here's a few ideas from Paul:

- Review your finances: Take a proper look at your cash flow, profit margins, and upcoming tax obligations without the usual pressure.

- Improve processes: Sort out the systems you've been meaning to improve or automate

- Plan your Q4 strategy: Map out revenue targets, marketing plans, and resource needs before the busy period hits

- Invest in yourself: Whether it's training, skills development, or simply working ON the business rather than IN it

Need help reviewing your finances or planning for the months ahead? We're here to help - let's get together over a cuppa.
