Whether you're just starting out or you've been running a business for years, it never hurts to have the fundamentals clear in your head.

Here are three taxes that come up in almost every conversation we have with clients.

Income Tax 💷
This is the tax you pay on money you earn as an individual. It applies to things like your salary, self-employed profits, rental income, and dividends.

Corporation Tax 🏢
If you run a limited company, this is the tax your company pays on its profits. The key thing to understand is that corporation tax is calculated before any money comes out of the business - so before you pay yourself a salary, take dividends, or make pension contributions.

VAT (Value Added Tax) 🧾
VAT is the tax added to goods and services. If your business is VAT registered, you charge VAT on what you sell, collect it from your customers, and pass it on to HMRC.

You can also reclaim VAT on most things you buy for the business, so what you actually hand over to HMRC is the difference between what you've collected and what you've paid out.

That's it. Three taxes, no jargon.

No panic needed. Here's a straightforward checklist of what every SME should have in place to stay compliant.

✅ Registered properly
✅ Clean bookkeeping
✅ Tax returns filed on time
✅ Payroll running correctly
✅ VAT under control
✅ MTD compatible
✅ Records retained
✅ Directors' duties covered

That hasn't changed. But how we're getting there has evolved.

I've always believed that strong businesses are built by strong people. Our team may be small, but everyone brings something different to the table, and we're united by a commitment to doing great work for our clients and continually improving what we do.

Most consultants we speak to are often making the same mistakes. Not because they're careless, but because no one ever told them there is a better way to do it.

Taking all your income as salary. Overlooking expenses you could legitimately claim. No dividend strategy. No pension planning. No real structure around tax at all.

It adds up. And by the time you realise, you've already overpaid.

A proper review of how you're set up, how you pay yourself, and where your money goes can make a genuine difference to what you keep at the end of the year.
