A couple of weeks ago, I met Amy at an event. She is a founder of Brighter Grays, set up to support young people who have been affected by bereavement. Amy's daughter lost her dad in 2021 and found support services to be either completely lacking or with strict criteria they didn't meet.

They run sessions every 2 weeks in the West Yorkshire region, currently self funded through donations and fund raising events. If the services could be of use to someone you know, or you're able to support in any way, her and the families she helps would be very grateful.

‘Well done on qualifying Jonny, so what is it you actually do?’ The question or something to the effect I’ve been asked numerous times over the past year.

I’ve spoken to others in the industry on how they explain it and had answers ranging from ‘I help people sleep at night’ to ‘I’m a personal trainer for your finances’. None of these resonated with me, so I’m going to try to articulate it myself for those who are interested.

A financial planner uses a multifaceted approach to help you manage your finances. At a high level, this involves:

• Analysing your current financial position

• Helping you articulate your life goals and define the financial requirements to achieve them

• Putting together a strategy to help you achieve those goals

Depending on your individual circumstances, the areas the plan covers will include some or all of the following:

• Retirement planning – helping you understand and amass the funds required to live the lifestyle you desire once you’ve given up work

• Investment planning – enabling you to fund other life goals when the time comes e.g. house deposit, wedding, paying school/university fees

• Insurance planning – evaluate the impact of unexpected life events and make sure you’re covered in case of those eventualities

• Estate planning – ensure your assets pass to the people you intend in the most efficient way possible

• Tax planning – analyse the tax position of your current finances and ensure your financial plan is as tax efficient as possible

• Budgeting – help you understand your incomings and outgoings and where savings could be made to achieve your goals

Paying into a pension is a smart way to invest in your future and can help you achieve a comfortable retirement. There is no limit on how much you can pay into your pension each year, however there is a limit on the total amount of contributions you can pay into your pension and claim tax relief, this is set by your ‘annual allowance’.
