📊 | MAKING TAX DIGITAL DOESN’T HAVE TO BE DIFFICULT

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is changing how businesses manage their tax, but once it’s set up properly, it can actually make life easier.

Here’s how:
✔ Everything in one place: No more chasing paperwork, your records are stored digitally and easy to access.
✔ Fewer errors: Automated systems reduce manual input and help keep your figures accurate.
✔ Better visibility: Track income and expenses in real time, not just at year's end.
✔ Less last-minute pressure: Regular updates mean fewer surprises when it’s time to file.

MTD requires you to keep digital records and submit updates through approved software.

But once in place, it can save time, improve accuracy, and give you greater control over your finances.

We’ll help you:
✔ Choose the right software
✔ Get set up correctly
✔ Stay fully compliant

📊 | MYTH VS. REALITY

Myth:
“I’ll save tax by putting everything through the business.”

Reality:
Trying to claim everything can do more harm than good.

HMRC has clear rules on what counts as a genuine business expense and anything outside that can lead to penalties, not savings.

Getting it right isn’t about claiming more.
It’s about claiming correctly.

At J F Hornby, we help you understand what’s allowable, what’s not and how to stay compliant while still being tax-efficient.

We don’t just record expenses.
We help you make informed decisions that stand up to scrutiny.

💬 If you’re ever unsure, it’s always better to check first.

🎓 | A PROUD MOMENT FOR OUR MD

When we can make a difference in our community, we will.

We’re incredibly proud to share that our Managing Director, Paul Hornby MBE, has been selected to receive a prestigious Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Lancashire 👏

The award recognises Paul’s contribution to community life, civic leadership and social impact, alongside his achievements in business.

From launching the Hornby Foundation in 2015, which has now given more than £400,000 to charities and good causes, to creating opportunities for young people through the Hornby Academy, this recognition reflects years of dedication to supporting others.

Reflecting on the news, Paul said he felt “surprised and humbled”, describing the honour as a tribute to the wider team, the Foundation and the Academy.

It’s a fantastic achievement and one that highlights the impact that can be made when business and community go hand in hand 🙌

📄 | WHEN DO I NEED TO COMPLETE A SELF-ASSESSMENT TAX RETURN?

If you’re earning income outside of PAYE, you may need to register for Self Assessment.

✅ You’ll usually need to if:
• You’re self-employed and earn over £1,000 in a tax year
• You receive untaxed income (e.g. from property or side income)
• You’re a company director (in some cases)

💡 What is PAYE?
PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is where tax is taken automatically from your wages or pension before you’re paid.
If all your income is taxed through PAYE, you usually won’t need to complete a tax return.

💡 Why it matters:
Once you go over the £1,000 trading allowance, or have income not covered by PAYE, you’ll need to tell HMRC and report it properly.

The earlier you get set up, the easier it is to stay organised and avoid last-minute stress.

We can help you:
✔ Register for Self Assessment
✔ Keep your records in order
✔ Submit your return accurately and on time

💬 Not sure if this applies to you? It’s always easier to check early than fix it later. Get in touch and we’ll point you in the right direction.

📊 | BEFORE YOU INCREASE YOUR PRICES

Make sure you’re clear on your numbers.

Rising costs mean many businesses feel they have no choice, but pricing decisions should be based on more than just pressure.

Understanding your margins, overheads and profitability helps you set prices that actually support your business, not just cover it.

The right price isn’t just about keeping up, it’s about staying sustainable.

One of our Chartered Accountants, Victoria Thompson, popped along to take a look and enjoyed a lovely coffee and cake while she was there.

Wishing the team at The Lodge Café all the best with their new venture, it’s a fantastic addition to the local community.

⚽️ | SUPPORTING THE BDJFL AWARDS EVENING

We were proud to sponsor the Barrow & District Junior Football League Awards Evening 👏⚽️

It was a brilliant opportunity to recognise the dedication, hard work and positive impact across grassroots football in our local community.

On the night, we sponsored the Keeping Football Positive Award, with Paul Hornby selecting the winner from three outstanding nominees.

A huge congratulations to Paul Goodwin, a fantastic recognition of the energy, encouragement and positivity he brings week in, week out.

Events like this highlight just how important volunteers, coaches and supporters are to the success of junior football.
Well done to everyone recognised on the night, incredibly well deserved.

📣| DID YOU KNOW?

Small businesses account for around 60% of the UK’s tax gap.

So, what is the tax gap?
It’s the difference between the amount of tax that should be paid and what is actually collected by HMRC. The complexity of the UK's taxation system means businesses can often make mistakes when dealing with their tax affairs.

At J F Hornby, we help clients:
✅ Stay on top of their records and deadlines
✅ Make sense of tax rules and obligations
✅ Reduce the risk of errors and penalties
✅ Feel confident that everything is in order

Need a bit of help or reassurance? Get in touch, we’re here to support you.
