Netwalking at Nicky Nook – what a day ☀️🚶

Friday gave us perfect weather for our netwalking event at Nicky Nook. Blue skies, stunning views and plenty of great conversations along the way.

It was fantastic to connect with so many people, all while supporting an important local cause. A big thank you to Lisa Archer, Katrina Hampson and the team from Furness Building Society for partnering with us.

We loved hearing more from Laurance Hancock about the incredible work The Boathouse Youth are doing across North Lancashire, and we’re so pleased to be able to support them.

And of course, finishing the afternoon at The Bellflower for drinks and a catch-up was the perfect end to a great event.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such an enjoyable afternoon.

We’re proud to be supporting this year’s Southern District YFC Field Day 🚜

On Saturday 23 May, Broughton Young Farmers Club will host the annual Southern District Field Day at Parsonage Farm, Silecroft, near Millom.

From tractor handling to flower arranging, and tug of war to crafts, there’s something for everyone.

Our team is closely connected with YFC too. Our own Emma is one of the Sedbergh YFC's tug of war coaches, pictured here with the team at the pre-Field Day competition day on May 9.

Events like this play an important role in bringing the rural community together and supporting the next generation of farmers.

Best of luck to everyone taking part, we hope you have a fantastic day 👏

Welcome back, Megan 👋

We’re delighted to have Megan Parsons back with the team this month following her maternity leave.

Even more to celebrate, Megan has passed her final Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) exam with distinction, meaning she is now fully CIPP Level 4 qualified 🎉

It’s a fantastic achievement and a real reflection of Megan’s dedication to her profession.

We’re really pleased to have her back and part of the team again 😊

Mental Health Awareness Week 💚

This week is a chance to pause and remember how important it is to look after ourselves and each other.

At Brown & Co, we know that small things can make a big difference. Checking in, listening, taking a break when it’s needed and creating a supportive environment for our team and the people we work with.

Wearing green this week is our simple way of showing support and starting conversations that matter. 💚

Netwalking at Nicky Nook – Friday 22 May 🚶

Kick-start your weekend with a relaxed netwalking event at Nicky Nook, Garstang, surrounded by great views, good conversation and even better company.

We’ve teamed up with Furness Building Society for an easy-paced walk designed to give you time to chat, connect and enjoy being outdoors.

Community is at the heart of everything we do, so we’re delighted to be joined by Laurance from The Boathouse Youth, who’ll be sharing more about the incredible work they do supporting young people across North Lancashire. We’re also taking the opportunity to raise funds for this brilliant local cause. If you’re able to donate, it would be hugely appreciated.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: one month on 📆

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has now been live for a month, and we know many sole traders and landlords are still getting to grips with what it actually means day to day.

To help cut through the noise, we’ve pulled together a checklist covering:
✅ Who needs to comply
💻 What MTD for Income Tax looks like in real terms
⏰ Quarterly reporting deadlines to be aware of
🔍 A few sensible checks worth doing sooner rather than later

It’s designed to be clear, practical and easy to dip into alongside your existing processes.

We shared the checklist in our most recent newsletter. If you’d like to receive regular updates, you can sign up for the Brown & Co newsletter below for straightforward insights and reminders 📩

📍 Brown & Co Team Day

On Friday, the Brown & Co team came together for our annual Team Day at Lancaster House Hotel. It was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the past year and look ahead to what’s next for the business.

The day featured a series of sessions led by the senior leadership team, focusing on business performance, team impact, culture and future plans.

The sessions highlighted a year of strong progress including:
📈 Team growth of 29%
💼 Fee income growth up 11%
🏢 Brand investment
⚙️ New systems introduced

There was also a focus on clients and the community, recognising the brilliant work done by the team across business acquisitions, inheritance tax and pension planning, and Xero migrations, as well as attending more than 50 networking events and supporting six local charities.

The day concluded with lunch together and an early finish, giving the team a well‑earned start to the bank holiday weekend 🌤️

At Brown & Co, investing in our people, culture and the way we work together is fundamental. Days like this help ensure we stay aligned, connected and moving forward as one team. 🤝

Pension rules can be trickier than they look.

The headline numbers don’t always tell the full story - especially if your income changes, you’re paying in through a business, or you’ve accessed a pension before. Small differences in circumstances can have a bigger impact than people expect.

Our latest Spotlight on Pension Allowances looks at the areas that most often catch people out including:
What the £60,000 annual allowance really means in practice
When tapering or the MPAA might apply
How carry forward can help - and where assumptions lead to mistakes

How I helped a client today

We were contacted by a landlord who realised they had split their rental income incorrectly on their tax return.

I reviewed the situation, checked the correct position with HMRC and explained to the client what we’d need to do to put things right. We talked through the next steps together so they knew exactly where they stood and felt confident they were in safe hands.

Situations like this can be worrying when you spot them but getting advice early and dealing with it promptly can make all the difference.
